What Extraction 2's Success Means For The Franchise
After taking a gunshot wound the neck at the end of the original Extraction, Rake is brought back from the dead in the sequel to undertake a dangerous new mission in an entirely new part of the world. The change in atmosphere, from the hot and sweaty streets of Dhaka to the chilly and snowswept landscapes of Eastern Europe, helped to keep things feeling fresh. This same approach could be used in the prospective Extraction 3, with Rake and his team undertaking yet another mission in a different region against a new villain.
Producers Joe and Anthony Russo previously expressed their interest in continuing the story in Extraction 3, and Hemsworth himself then later confirmed (only a day after the release of the sequel) that talks were already happening at Netflix about a follow-up movie. The Thor actor has been open about his love for having a franchise "outside of Marvel," and Hargrave has revealed that he already has an idea for Extraction 3.
While initial viewership for Extraction 2 was already strong, the fact that it's now in the top 10 all but guarantees that another sequel is on the way. Depending on the reception to the third film, it's entirely possible that the franchise could continue beyond it. Hargrave has already teased a spinoff prequel movie following Golshifteh Farahani's Nik and Adam Bessa's Yaz.
