Extraction 2 sets Chris Hemsworth's Tyler Rake on another deadly mission, though it at least gives him time to recover from the original movie's ending. Outside of his MCU role as Thor, Hemsworth hasn't had the best of luck when it comes to franchises. Ghostbusters 2016 failed to launch planned sequels, while Men In Black: International and The Huntsman: Winter's War also underperformed. His fortunes have turned around thanks to Extraction, with the Netflix original giving him a more grounded, mature vehicle to show off his action prowess.

Extraction's divisive ending hinted at Rake's survival after he was shot in the neck and fell from a bridge. Extraction 2 reveals how he survived his injuries, and he's later recruited to extract the family of a Georgian gangster from prison. Naturally, this mission doesn't go according to plan and Tyler and his team have to fight/shoot/explode their way out of trouble. There are already plans in the works for a third Extraction, in addition to possible spinoffs.

Extraction 2 Takes Place 9 Months After The Original Movie

Chris Hemsworth as Tyler Rake in a coma in Extraction 2.

As Extraction 2's trailer reveals, Tyler's team manages to rescue and revive him in the nick of time and he then spends months in the hospital. While Tyler might be tough, it would be stretching credulity somewhat if he jumped out of his hospital bed after only a couple of weeks and got back in the action. Extraction 2 takes place nine months on from the first film, with the first act charting Tyler's recovery before Idris Elba's mysterious new character recruits him for another rescue mission in Georgia.

Why Extraction 2 Took So Long To Release

Extraction debuted on Netflix in April 2020 and quickly became one of the streamer's most-watched titles. Extraction 2 was announced soon after, though it took the sequel another three years to arrive. This was partly due to Extraction 2 beginning production amidst the Covid-19 pandemic. The follow-up was supposed to start filming in September 2021 in Sydney, but according to an article in The Prague Reporter, pandemic-related restrictions made it almost impossible to shoot there. Instead, the production had to move to Prague, and it officially started shooting at the end of November 2021.

Extraction 2 later moved to Austria, and the sequel didn't wrap filming until April 2022, though the filmmakers reassembled for reshoots in November of that year. The sequel appears to have upped the scale considerably from the original Extraction and will feature a 21-minute "oner" action sequence, making it one of the longest one-shot setpieces ever attempted. Hopefully, viewers will feel the three-year wait was worth it when Extraction 2 hits Netflix.
