Disney+ has cancelled a critical darling superhero show after a cliffhanger season finale. The streaming service has developed a wide variety of original shows, with a many of them being part of the superhero genre. The vast majority of these are part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, with titles such as WandaVision, Moon Knight, Agatha All Along, The Falcon and the Winter Soldier, and Loki earning the franchise a cumulative total of eight Primetime Emmy nominations and three Golden Globe nominations alongside seven Creative Arts Emmy wins out of 52 nominations.

The library of Disney+ shows has expanded considerably since the platform launched in 2019. In addition to the original shows that have been produced in the ensuing half-decade, the library of titles from their various brands including Marvel Studios, 20th Century Studios, and Lucasfilm has expanded due to the introduction of adult profiles for mature content that came in the wake of the arrival of Netflix's Marvel series including Daredevil and The Punisher. Disney+ also airs shows that were developed for their international platform Star and Disney's other streaming service Hulu, including the 2023 show that has just been cancelled.

Extraordinary Has Been Cancelled After Season 2

The UK Superhero Show Is Not Moving Forward

Extraordinary has been cancelled by Disney+. The two-season show follows costume shop employee Jen (Máiréad Tyers), a non-powered twentysomething in a world where superpowers are common, attempting to discover her own power. It is a UK-based series that was developed for Star and debuted on Hulu in 2023. It has been well-reviewed, earning perfect 100% scores for both seasons from critics on Rotten Tomatoes and an average audience score of 92%. Extraordinary season 2, which aired in 2024, ended on a cliffhanger that saw Jen tumble into a void.

Extraordinary, which was created by Emma Moran, also stars Bilal Hasna and Luke Rollason.

Per Variety, Disney+ has officially cancelled Extraordinary, which will not be returning for season 3 on the streaming platform. At the time of writing, Emma Moran has not shared an official statement about the cancellation on social media or elsewhere. Below, read a comment from an unnamed Disney+ representative about the cancellation, which was announced alongside the cancellation of the historical drama Shardlake:

Disney+ Original series Extraordinary will not be returning for a third season on the service. We’re so proud of the hilarious, award-winning series brought to life by the incredibly talented British and Irish cast and crew, our production partners at Sid Gentle Films, and the exceptional writing talent of creator Emma Moran... We hope to work with all of our partners across these shows again in the future.

What This Means For Extraordinary

Its Cliffhanger May Never Be Resolved

Jen looking through a stack of books that have been made into a circle in Extraordinary season 2

So far, there is no word as to whether the superhero show can or will be shopped around to other networks or streaming services outside of Disney+. However, regardless, the platform does not have a strong precedent for its cancelled series finding new homes elsewhere. So far, even series with stronger IP ties such as Willow, National Treasure: Edge of History, and The Mighty Ducks: Game Changers have not been picked up elsewhere, so it seems probable that Extraordinary's season 2 cliffhanger will truly be the end of the series.

Extraordinary may no longer be available [if it is removed from the platform]...

The show's future on the platform is also unknown. While some of their cancelled shows are still available to stream, in 2023, multiple series that had recently ended were pulled from their library in their entirety, including The Mighty Ducks and Willow. Should that be the case, Extraordinary may no longer be available in general. Though some streaming shows that were cancelled and removed, such as Paramount+'s Grease: Rise of the Pink Ladies, became available on video on demand afterward, this has not been the case for either of the aforementioned Disney+ shows.

Our Take On The Extraordinary Cancellation

The Show's Creators Have Bright Futures Ahead Of Them

It remains to be seen if Disney+ makes good on the promise to continue working with the creatives behind Extraordinary. If that happens, it does not seem likely that every single one of the major cast and crew would reunite on whatever project is next. However, they all seem to have bright futures even though the show will not be continuing. This would only be fitting for the program, which was nominated for three BAFTA Awards in 2024. However, so far, neither Emma Moran, Sofia Oxenham, nor Máiréad Tyers have projects that have been officially announced.

Extraordinary was nominated for the BAFTA Award for Scripted Comedy on top of two nods for Female Performance in a Comedy Programme for both Sofia Oxenham and Máiréad Tyers.

Though the two leads' projects are unknown, both have already appeared on recent prominent Prime Video shows since the end of Extraordinary season 2, with Oxenham playing Princess Eugenie in Prime Video's A Very Royal Scandal and Tyers ing the My Lady Jane cast as Susannah. Additionally, the other stars of the Disney+ show already have appearances lined up in other projects. Hasna is set to appear in Bend It Like Beckham director Gurinder Chadha's Christmas Carol riff Christmas Karma, while Rollason will appear in the sasquatch comedy Two Big Feet.
