A simple scene in the Bucky Barnes (Sebastian Stan) are ready to take center stage.
The Falcon and the Winter Soldier picks up with Sam and Bucky six months after Chris Evans) decided to trade the present for the past by going back in time to marry Peggy Carter (Hayley Atwell). Without Steve there, Sam and Bucky are left to move on on their own, with Sam grappling with the responsibility of taking on the Captain America mantle and Bucky learning to live with his demons from his Winter Soldier days.
The Falcon and the Winter Soldier promises plenty of old fashioned Marvel action, but it will also have some quieter moments. For example, the premiere deals with the concept of how superheroes pay their rent. According to showrunner Malcolm Spellman, that simple concept inspired a lot of conversations at Marvel Studios. As Spellman shared with Collider:
SPELLMAN: Yeah, it was so weird. When we wrote that scene, it triggered a huge conversation in the halls of Marvel, and everybody had opinions. So many people chimed in. And the people who we've been doing interviews with, everyone is sort of responding the same way. It's definitely satisfying a core thing for Marvel fans.
Audiences have seen Sam and Bucky pull off superhuman feats, whether it's flying through the air on synthetic wings (Sam) or ripping a steering wheel out of a car while it's in motion (Bucky). In taking a step back and considering the more mundane parts of their lives, The Falcon and the Winter Soldier will humanize them even farther than the movies have. Yes, fans know Sam and Bucky are human, but they've always appeared larger than life. The rent scene only serves to connect them even more to fans; we may be stuck paying rent, but so are Falcon and the Winter Soldier!
This Falcon and the Winter Soldier scene really highlights what's so special about the Disney+ shows: They give Marvel the chance to really dig into the minutia of their characters. When it comes to the movies, there are only about 2 hours to tell the story, and that doesn't always allow for random character beats. Luckily, early reactions to The Falcon and the Winter Soldier have indicated the show will provide the character development fans have been waiting for.
The Falcon and the Winter Soldier premieres Friday on Disney+.
