Fallout 4 boasts some of the most intricate lore and range of gameplay possibilities. The multi-award-winning Bethesda hit has been critically and literally picked apart and sorted through since its release nearly a decade ago. One of the best parts of games like Fallout 4 is the hidden secrets and Easter eggs that can be found all over the map. While there are plenty of places online dedicated to parsing through Bethesda's secret additions to Fallout games, many of them aren't so secret anymore.
Even though there are tons of guides and maps designating all the hidden spots, there are some that are more worth visiting than others. As a non-comprehensive list, these are some of the most easily looked-over and unmarked hidden locations. Whether it's a fun twist or a weird area, Fallout 4 is always worth exploring to the fullest.
10 Carhenge
A Rusting Relic
As an unmarked location, Carhenge is a rather hidden and almost completely overlooked secret, despite being incredibly famous. The only thing that makes Carhenge unrecognizable at first is the massive mutant behemoth that skulks around the area. Since it is unmarked, many players miss it unless they venture across the land to find it. This spot is known for the patrolling giant mutant being notoriously hard, so be sure to prepare by bringing plenty of healing items and weapons.
Carhenge is a reference to Stonehenge, the famous neolithic monument in the United Kingdom.
Carhenge is directly south of Walden Pond and looks like an odd collection of shacks from afar. This famed secret presents a good challenge for Fallout monster enthusiasts and those who noticed the nod to Carhenge in Fallout 76. This is a perfect starting point for diving into some of the more hidden areas in the Fallout universe.
9 Jaws Boat
A Nautical Nightmare
This paritally underwater secret is easily missed unless players particularly enjoy swimming. The shark cage boat requires quite a bit of trekking, as you have to start at the Cambridge police station and follow the river until finding the boat in question. The most interesting part of this boat is the Jaws reference in the form of a mutated dolphin alongside a skeleton and the ominous shark cage hiding underneath the water.

Fallout 4: What Happened To Confessor Martin In The Far Harbor DLC?
Confessor Martin went missing without a trace, and while the game doesn't give any concrete answers, there are some clues as to what happened.
The Jaws Easter egg in Fallout 4 doesn't stop with just the dolphin, but includes the placement of a machete and, specifically, a blue bandanna at the mouth of the creature. This location does not appear on the map, and somehow it seems that the skeleton that used to be aboard the vessel has disappeared. Even as a skeleton, Captain Quint can't catch a break.
8 Massachusetts State House Dungeon
A Dungeon Deep
The Massachusetts State House dungeon is one of the best optional dungeons within Fallout 4. Occupied by mirelurks and a group of raiders, there are plenty of secrets hiding in the walls and wires of this building. As it is not a required dungeon, the Massachusetts State House is often overlooked for being a dangerous intermission. It's an easy building for players to frequtnly, but never venture within due to it not being necessary.
An interesting feature of this building is the hidden rooms. One room contains a spooky bear with red glowing eyes under a desk that spawns a mirelurk if you sit in the chair, while another has three teddy bears surrounding a skeleton that is holding a dose of Psycho. If players approach the skeleton, they'll trigger an eerie piano note that doesn't have a source.
7 Fallon's Department Store Maze
A Maze of Mystery
The Fallon's Department Store Maze is an interesting hidden location, as it is not completely a secret but often overlooked. The department store building itself is filled with raiders and ghouls, but for players looking for a challenge, there is a rather creepy maze hiding within the store. There is a small chance that players can get a radiant quest from various factions that leads to Fallon's Department Store, leading to some interesting gameplay.
The highest level houses a raider in a full Power Armor that is paired with a small army of lackeys.
The interesting part of this labyrinthine area is that the maze extends upward and different foes and surprises are waiting on every floor. The highest level houses a raider in a full Power Armor that is paired with a small army of lackeys. At the end of the tunnel, however, there is a pink paint option for the player's Fallout 4 Power Armor going forward.
6 Mirelurk Egg Shrine
A Ghoulish Shrine
Near the edge of the Glowing Sea, an odd room exists that is guarded by an outfit of Longshoremen and an eerie atmosphere. The room contains a single mirelurk egg and is surrounded by brain fungus around the room. This is near the Electrical Hobbyists Club for players searching for this unsettling sight, but be warned that mirelurks will appear and attack the player once the egg is picked up.
This area is increasingly odd, as there is no direct clue that it is a reference to something. This can be chalked up to a very weird secret added by Bethesda, or potentially a taste of what is to come in a later Fallout edition.
5 Atomatoys Headquarters
A Corporate Lair
Easily overlooked building in the Back Bay area of Boston, the ruins of the pre-War toy manufacturers, Atomatoys, can be found. The tightly contained building has a bit of a maze-like layout, with the building entrance opening into the basement. Exploring this area opens players up to an insight into the lives of the people in the office and a ton of Giddyup Buttercups, as there are over twelve of them alongside their parts in the basement alone.
There is a ton of useful loot to be gained in the Atomatoys Headquarters, including fashion cores and the Super Mutant Cowl Armor. Players should be aware that this area requires several master- and advanced-level locked terminals, so be prepared for a bit of key hunting.
4 Vitale Pumphouse Bunker
A Hidden Bunker
The unmarked bunker near the Saugus Ironworks and the Vitale Pumphouse should always be on players' lists of places to go, but seems to be a pretty unacknowledged secret. Southeast of the ironworks and to the east of Finch farm, the pumphouse is locked by a famous video game code originally made famous by System Shock: 0451 (the full code is actually 10-4-5-1 in Fallout 4).
0451 was the code to access the offices of Looking Glass Studios, which developed System Shock. The code is frequently used in other games as an homage, and Deathloop even tells players they already know the code.
The Vitale Pumphouse Bunker contains a legendary weapon, the Gainer. A .44 Magnum modified to fire incendiary bullets, this legendary weapon comes equipped with all the bells and whistles that pair with the Incendiary Legendary effect.
This gun is a nod to developer Steve Gaynor's love of ultra-powerful magnums in games, according to his co-developer and friend Joel Burgess (via Twitter).
3 Evan's Trailer
A Lonely Refuge
Although not directly a secret, the story behind this place is a really touching tribute to Reddit NoohjXLVII's brother Evan, who ed away before Bethesda could deliver a care package of Fallout merchandise to the family. The two brothers had been long-time fans of Fallout, and after their father's ing, Bethesda planned on sending the gift, but it didn't arrive in time. Bethesda immortalized Evan in the Nuka-World add-on.
If players speak to Evan outside Nuka-World, he will give the Sole Survivor the Nuka-Love recipe book. Evan is a friendly person to encounter, as even taking items near him will not trigger any hostile or negative reactions to theft. For players aware of Evan's story, this well-preserved memorial is a place of respect that more people should know about.
2 Coastal Cottage Hideout
A Secret Hideaway
There is an excellent legendary farming area under a bridge near the coastal cottage. The slightly eerie location paired with the need to farm it for good items makes it worth visiting over and over, especially since it's semi-hidden location makes it easily missed by most players. The Coastal Hideout is located halfway between Mahkra Fishpacking and the coastal cottage and can be found near a mirelurk queen spawn area.
This is an interesting unmarked location to visit and was originally supposed to be part of a cut questline that was ultimately removed from Fallout 4.
This highly irradiated room has multiple skeletons with random loot and lots of feral ghouls. This is an interesting unmarked location to visit and was originally supposed to be part of a cut questline that was ultimately removed from Fallout 4. Players should keep an eye out, as random encounters may happen on the bridge above the hideout, potentially ruining any plans to sneak inside.
1 The Cat Shack
A Cat Lover's Dream
This apartment full of cats is one of the coolest hidden locations in Fallout 4. Located in Diamond City, this house is in the upper stands and is a dual-level house. There are no items of any importance here, but the best part is the 25 house cats that are roaming freely within the residence. The house belongs to the late Eustace Hawthorne, and the relatively cluttered home is still decorated with plush cat-scratched furniture.
Fallout 4 is the only game that the apartment full of cats appears in, so players are in for a unique appearance compared to some of the other hidden notes that have been discussed here. To get inside the residence, players need to find the Hawthorne residence key or open Advanced-locked doors. Maybe surviving in the post-apocalyptic wastelands isn't as important as hanging out with 25 cats in the ruins of a luxury apartment for the rest of the Sole Survivor's life.
