Since 2018, Fallout 76. Unlike previous Fallout games, set hundreds of years after the nuclear bombs dropped, Fallout 76 takes place 25 years after the apocalypse. Although the setting is different and it is an always-online multiplayer game, many notable Fallout features return in Fallout 76. One of these features is a limited inventory space for items, indicated by how much weight can be carried.

Players familiar with Fallout games know how important it is to manage an inventory. If the items in a player’s inventory weigh more than the character’s maximum carry weight, they will become “over-encumbered," which drains AP while walking and prevents sprinting. Keeping track of carry weight and inventory weight is important since players don’t want to get caught in a dangerous situation while over-encumbered. Thankfully, there are ways to increase a character’s carry capacity. One of the most direct ways to increase carry weight is by equipping the small backpack or the standard backpack. Here’s how to find the plans for both backpacks in Fallout 76.

How to Get The Backpacks in Fallout 76

Many useful items in Fallout 76 are created using plans, which can be acquired through various means in Appalachia. The small backpack plans are found by playing the main storyline. Players will end up finding the plans within a building of Morgantown Airport. However, these plans can be picked up at any time in the game. First, players must head to Morgantown Airport. Head to the white building. If players fast travel to the airport, the building will be directly ahead of the spawn point, on the left side of the street. The building is full of Scorched, so be ready to fight several groups of them along the journey to the small backpack plans.

Head into the building and go down the stairs in the room labeled "restricted area." Move straight through the large corridor, fighting Scorched along the way. At the end of the corridor, there is a large crack in the wall. Through the crack, grab the keycard in the corpse’s hand. Use the terminal to open the nearby door, head upstairs, and push the red button to open the sealed door. Head down the hallway to the right and use the keycard to open the next sealed door. Go up the stairs to fight more scorched, moving toward the back of the corridor. A room labeled “Command Post” at the end of the hallway contains an Overseer’s Cache with plans for the small backpack.

The standard backpack must be acquired through different means. Head to Camp Lewis in the Pioneer Scout Camp along the shoreline of Grafton Lake. A Mr. Handy named Scout Leader Jaggy offers players a quest called the Order of the Tadpole. This quest requires players to earn the Tadpole badge by demonstrating Kindness, Helpfulness, Bravery, and Growth. Once this questline is completed, the plans for the standard backpack are unlocked.

The backpacks can be modified both aesthetically and functionally. Raw materials are needed to construct and upgrade backpacks, but thankfully, the materials aren't as rare as items like adhesive or screws. Upgrades can provide benefits such as additional storage capacity, resistance to certain forms of damage, and slowed food spoilage. With all the benefits supplied by backpacks in Fallout 76, there is no shortage of good reasons to unlock them!
