The Skyline Valley update in Fallout 76 introduced an array of useful items and structures that players can utilize at their base. Among these unique structures is the Foundry Smelter, a rare item that can only be crafted by acquiring the Foundry Smelter Plans. These plans are exceedingly rare to find, and there are very few means to acquire them.
For those who are interested in the Rad-inducing structure but aren't sure where to get the plans, or what to do with them, there are a few steps you can take for the process. Ensure that you are well-leveled, as some of these methods can be challenging, and the Foundry Smelter itself, if not utilized correctly, can be harmful to careless players.

How To Get The Foundry Smelter Plan In Fallout 76
Complete Daily Ops
There are a handful of ways that the Foundry Smelter Plan can be acquired in Fallout 76, most of which are a little challenging. There is a chance that players can obtain it by completing the Daily OP, or 'Daily Operation', which is a PvE game mode that was introduced as part of Fallout 76's update, One Wasteland For All.
The Daily Op consists of a randomized dungeon, allowing players to partake in clearing missions that last 8 minutes, which can also be repeated. While this is designed for experienced players, they rotate every day at 1 pm EST, giving you a good chance of obtaining the Foundry Smelter Plan.
While there's no guarantee, if you complete the Daily Op quickly, you're more likely to get lucky. Jenn Dowden on YouTube completed a Daily Op in 7 minutes and 50 seconds and still managed to obtain the Foundry Smelter Plan under Rare Rewards, showcasing that it is possible.
The Foundry Smelter Plan is also a tradable item, meaning that you can check various online trading forums for Fallout 76 and see if other players are willing to part with it for something valuable you may have to offer.
Purchase From Minerva
The Foundry Smelter Plan can also be part of Minerva's stock during one of her sales events. Minerva is a Gold Bullion vendor who sells rare plans and recipes for a discounted price. Usually, her plans are 25% off. However, her inventory in Fallout 76 changes on a weekly basis, and she rotates between the four following locations each week:
- Foundation
- The Crater
- Fort Atlas
- The Whitespring Resort
This poses many challenges for players, especially with her inventory limitations. Another player may purchase the Foundry Smelter Plan before you get a chance, or it may simply not be available in her inventory when you visit her.
It is still worth trying to acquire it through Minerva if you haven't had luck with the Daily Ops or haven't been able to purchase it from another player. This week as of writing, Minerva can be found at Whitespring Resort [sale #12], and if the Foundry Smelter Plan is available, it will cost 1000 Gold Bullion in Fallout 76. Overall, though, obtaining it as a drop from Daily Ops is the easiest way to acquire it.

How To Use The Foundry Smelter Plan In Fallout 76
Craft At Your C.A.M.P. Or Workshop
With the Foundry Smelter Plan at hand, you're now able to craft the Foundry Smelter at a C.A.M.P. or workshop, under the 'Floor Decor' section. Aside from the plans, you will also need x5 Steel, which is a common component that can be found by dismantling many objects scattered around the wasteland, much like Screws in Fallout 76.
Anything from Flip Lighters and Adjustable Wrenches, to Sauce Pans and Accordions will contain Steel that you can scrap and use for crafting.
Simply interact with your Workshop, and use x5 Steel along with the Foundry Smelter Plan to create the Foundry Smelter. You can then choose where in your home to place it down, pressing 'E' to build it in the designated spot. Upon activating this industrial-grade smelter, it emits up to +123 rads, which is a huge amount of radiation.
Benefits Of The Foundry Smelter
Given that Rads decrease your HP, this may seem harmful and something to ordinarily avoid in the world of Fallout, but some players may benefit from the effects of Rads. Among the players who would use the Foundry Smelter are those utilizing Bloodied builds, one of the most popular builds in Fallout 76.
This setup relies on using Rads to regulate health by staying at around 20% HP. The purpose is to maximize the effects of certain Perks and Armor sets in Fallout 76, that increase damage while also decreasing health.
While roaming the wasteland of Appalachia, there are a host of ways that players can pick up Rads. Players can consume irradiated foods, drinks, and High Radiation Fluids, or swim in contaminated water. There are even areas that you can walk into, such as blast zones, that will start to make your Rad bar go up.
However, most of these take a lot of effort to do, requiring you to go out of your way to certain areas and pick up certain goods. It's far more convenient to have something at your base that can serve utility, which is what the Foundry Smelter offers.
While other C.A.M.P. items in Fallout 76 can do the same thing, such as Astroid and Radiation barrels, these don't give off enough radiation to warrant their usefulness, and wouldn't benefit players who require more exposure for their build.
When crafted and built, the Foundry Smelter irradiates players much quicker than other radioactive items, at around 44 Rads per interaction, making it worthwhile as a useful addition to your C.A.M.P. in Fallout 76.
