Summary

  • Fallout: London offers a new experience in London, creating a massive mod similar in size to Fallout 4.
  • The mod captures the true essence of Bethesda titles; bugs, glitches and all.
  • Despite crashes & bugs, Fallout: London remains a well-crafted project providing fans with the immersive experience they desire.

After years of waiting, and a fair few setbacks, Fallout: London is finally here to give players the sequel that they didn't know they wanted. As the name suggests, Fallout: London is set in England's capital and offers players a look at what the world of Fallout looks like outside the USA for the first time. As a total conversion mod, it is massive, more than Fallout 4's equal in size, and changes almost everything about the game, but some things never change with Bethesda titles.

Mods like Fallout: London are possible due to the Creation Kit, a modding tool provided by Bethesda.

It should be noted that although Fallout: London is big enough to be its own game, it uses Fallout 4 as a base similar to some DLCs and can be viewed as such. Fallout: London isn't the only massive mod that changes everything in a Bethesda game, with the Skywind project hoping to do the same with The Elder Scrolls 5: Skyrim. It is a community-made project that is fully voice-acted and can be played for free, provided players have Fallout 4 and its DLC already, and features the same buggy experience everyone loves from Bethesda games.

Fallout: London Offers The True Bethesda Experience In A New Setting

And Does It In A Way That The Series Never Could

The Fallout series on Amazon Prime has been a smash hit. It remains true to the world of Fallout, from its inclusion of key factions to its humor and aesthetic. Quite frankly, it is as good an adaption as can be hoped for, but there is one key feature that the series was unable to emulate from the Fallout games to fully encapsulate the Bethesda experience down to a tee. Yes, the story, world, and aesthetic may be perfect, but the entire show is a bit too smooth, lacking the bugs and glitches that Bethesda is known for.

The Fallout series was renewed for a second season shortly after the first was released, but there is no official release date yet.

Despite the bugs and glitches, the community has been rather loving with Bethesda titles, often calling them features as a joke. These bugs are expected in a Bethesda title, and most of its titles have received praise in spite of them, which is something that the Fallout series is unable to emulate due to the nature of its medium. This is not something that Fallout: London struggles to emulate, however, being buggy and glitchy but well-made and creative enough to receive plenty of praise.

It should be noted that the creation of the Fallout: London mod is a massive undertaking, and the bugs will likely be ironed out somewhat as the game's post-launch life begins. Having said that, players have reported plenty of crashes during their explorations of post-apocalyptic London, but this shouldn't be surprising. Fallout: London features an additional 35GB worth of content that replaces the base game, and getting it to all play nicely together constantly is an impossible task.

Fallout: London May Be New, But It's Still Based On A Bethesda Game

Bugs, Glitches, And Crashes Are Guaranteed

Fallout London - Abandoned buses on Tower Bridge

At the end of the day, Fallout: London uses Fallout 4 and all its DLC as a skeleton. Mods themselves are known to cause crashes and issues, especially when they start to become the size that Fallout: London is. Pair this with a bug-filled base game, and it starts to become amazing that Fallout: London can even run at all. It's even more impressive when players look at the system requirements for Fallout: London, which is much lower than many games being released today.

Bugs shouldn't take away from how creative and well-crafted Fallout: London is. It changes everything about the base game, recreates the heart of London in an irradiated world, and remains as loyal as possible to the source material. It is a massive project made by an incredibly talented team that gives Fallout fans the experience that they didn't know they needed, with the bugs, glitches, and all that fans expect out of Bethesda games. Quite frankly, it wouldn't be Fallout without it.

Amazingly, without a new official game since the release of Fallout 76, the Fallout franchise is sailing proudly. A lore-accurate, entertaining, and vibrant show has brought so many new eyes to the franchise, while Fallout: London is a brilliant love letter to existing fans, especially the British ones. While the series brings the world to life on the silver screen, Fallout: London brings the true Bethesda experience across the pond, earning immense praise despite the bugs and glitches.
