Prime Video's ambitious adaptation of Fallout has impressed critics and viewers alike, and the video game series is already renewed for season 2. The show is adapted from the video game franchise of the same name by Bethesda, which follows an unnamed traveler in a Cold War pastiche nuclear post-apocalyptic wasteland. Though the game description seems rather simple, it is the tremendous lore and exhilarating RPG action that made Fallout so beloved, and the retrofuturistic style was ripe for adaptation into a TV show or movie.

Quickly becoming one of the most highly-anticipated gaming adaptations when Amazon Prime Video announced they were tackling Bethesda's crown jewel, each successive update only heightened the Fallout fan hysteria. When the show finally arrived in April 2024, Fallout more than lived up to expectations and delivered a faithful recreation of the unique game that earned high marks from critics. Even before the 8-episode first season premiered, speculation was already swirling regarding a second season of Fallout, and season 1's success necessitated a quick renewal.

With the sophomore season shaping up to be one of the most anticipated installments in recent TV history, the latest news comes as a filming update for Fallout season 2 from Walton Goggins. The star who turned heads as the gunslinging Ghoul in season 1 was interviewed by Complex where he revealed that season 2 is "deep" into production. In the rest of his comments, Goggins mentions how season 2 is where the show really finds its footing while still staying true to the tone of season 1.

Read Goggins' comments here:

"We're deep into Season 2 of Fallout. Now that people understand what the world is, this story just takes it to a whole other level. I've been around a long time, and usually, a show that people are attracted to, with that license, the second season really starts cooking, right? That's when some real magic can happen. It says a lot about a lot. It stays in these lanes of the tone that was kinda set but also veers outside of them in the most interesting ways."

Fallout Season 2 Is Confirmed

It Took One Week To Renew Fallout

Unlike other series, the renewal status of Fallout was never really in any jeopardy and Amazon Prime Video opted to order a second season only a week after the show debuted. The overwhelming viewership numbers of season 1 made it one of Prime Video's most-watched shows ever, and with so much to build on, it comes as no surprise Amazon jumped at the opportunity to promise more episodes.

All 8 episodes of Fallout season 1 premiered on April 10, 2024.

Leslie Uggams (Betty Pearson) announced in October 2024 (at NYCC) that shooting would begin in November 2024 - which had led to some interesting speculation about a season 2 release date. The first season of Fallout started filming on July 5, 2022, and premiered April 10, 2024. This is not surprising, as the dystopian sci-fi show will have extensive post-production to bring the wasteland of Fallout to life. However, that does mean that if the second season takes as long between filming and release as the first, it won't hit screens until mid-to-late 2026.

Fallout Season 2 Cast Details

Lucy Returns To The Wasteland In Season 2

Perhaps the hardest thing to speculate on for Fallout season 2 is the cast, and that is largely because the direction of the series is uncertain. There has been talk about making Fallout season 2 an anthology, much like the games, which would mean the cast would probably be replaced going forward. Each installment in the gaming series is set in a different location in the Fallout universe, and it would be logical for the show to follow suit. On the other hand, the depth put into the characters would likely not be thrown away after only 8 episodes, meaning some should return.

Ella Purnell (Lucy MacLean) and Walton Goggins (The Ghoul) have spoken candidly about their respective characters' futures, and that means they're returning. With those two onboard, that means it probably won't be an anthology and will instead follow along with the story from season 1, and all of its surviving characters as well. A new cast member has already ed the sophomore outing, with the addition of Macaulay Culkin as an as-yet-unnamed recurring role. Culkin will play a “crazy genius-type character," but that's all that's known.

Though there have been hints about making Fallout season 2 an anthology like the games, the ending of season 1 left a lot of business unsettled. However, it's possible that both things could be true as the second season could introduce a new main character who could find their story interwoven with Lucy's quest to track down her father, who has apparently fled to New Vegas. The aforementioned city is the setting for Fallout: New Vegas, a standalone title in the RPG franchise that was released between Fallout 3 and 4.

the history of the city and its post-apocalyptic politics could be a central focus in the sophomore outing.

Though the franchise had been expanding its lore with each subsequent installment, New Vegas upped the ante by telling a compelling story that introduced timeless Fallout characters like Mr. House. Behind-the-scenes footage from season 2's production has revealed a pre-war glimpse at Las Vegas, which implies there will be more flashbacks. Since Lucy and her family likely have no connection to pre-war Vegas, this suggests the history of the city and its post-apocalyptic politics could be a central focus in the sophomore outing.

On top of all that, The Ghoul's search for his wife and daughter is only just getting started, and Maximus' promise to find Lucy means the next season will likely have three chase plots going on at once. Another main character added to the mix would make the sophomore season rather busy, but the writers proved themselves to be deft at mixing multiple storylines in season 1. Regardless of the specifics, Fallout season 2 will be jam-packed with wasteland action that touches on multiple points in the franchise's lore.
