Summary
- Voice modulator added to power armor for Knight Titus brings robotic intensity to the Brotherhood of Steel character interactions.
- Amazon Prime Video's Fallout power armor design is noticeably cleaner than game versions, sparking fan on suit maintenance realism.
- The Fallout show's reimagined assault rifle design connects with power armor, making more sense for heavy squad weapon use.
The iconic power armor is one of the most familiar sights of the trailer for Amazon's Fallout dropped, media for the series has been showing off the recognizable power armor of the franchise.
Within the games, the power armor was primarily worn by the Brotherhood of Steel, a disciplined military order of technology-hunting soldiers with chapters scattered across the American continent. While these chapters had drastically differing goals, ideals, and aspirations, they were united in their coveting of powerful weaponry and use of power armor, developed for use in the U.S. military during the war that preceded the events of the series. So far, two named characters of Fallout's cast have been implied to wear power armor, Knight Titus and Maximus.
7 The TV Show Added A Voice Modulator To The Power Armor
Knight Titus sounds strikingly similar to a fully robotic Fallout character
The effect brings to mind the voice of a beloved giant robot used by the Brotherhood of Steel in Fallout 3, Liberty Prime.
In a brief scene released by Amazon, power armor Knight Titus of the Brotherhood of Steel intervened during a developing shootout between the vault dweller Lucy and Walter Goggins' The Ghoul. When addressing the former, the suit seemed to artificially project Knight Titus' voice through some kind of speaker system, overlying it with a menacing mechanical voice modulator for bonus intimidation points. This capability was never mentioned in the Fallout games, though the effect brings to mind the voice of a beloved giant robot used by the Brotherhood of Steel in Fallout 3, Liberty Prime.
6 Amazon's Power Armor Is Noticeably Cleaner Than The Game's
The dirt and grime of the post-apocalypse seems to be brought to a mirror polish
While fan reception to the accuracy of the power armor from what Amazon has shown off so far has been relatively warm, one recurring complaint has arisen regarding the state of the suit's maintenance. Most technology used in the Fallout universe was centuries old, having been covered in layer after layer of dirt and grime from heavy use over the course of the apocalypse. Interestingly, the power armor of the TV series seemed to have been intricately maintained and cleaned, giving the impression of a lack of use.
5 The Power Armor Fixes The Problems Of Fallout 4's Assault Rifle
The TV show has provided new context justifying the controversial weapon
Prime Video's TV series has largely taken inspiration from the art style of the most recent games, putting a contentious weapon from Fallout 4 back into the spotlight, the assault rifle. The clunky eyesore of a weapon initially drew complaints from fans upon its introduction, more like an airplane-mounted light machine gun rather than a comfortable workhorse assault rifle a single person could realistically carry around. Not only that, but the weapon's design was based on a World War I-era Lewis machine gun, clashing with the 50s aesthetic of the series' weaponry.
Luckily, the Fallout 4 assault rifle has been fixed to make more sense thanks to the series' pairing of the weapon with power armor. Amazon has upscaled the assault rifle to be a large, heavy squad weapon clearly necessitating a boost in strength from power armor to effectively wield. This is demonstrated in early images of Fallout released by Amazon, in which a power armor stood next to a plain soldier. The "assault rifle" nearly measured up to be the same size as the 's non-mechanized companion, officially making it a dedicated power armor weapon.
4 The Power Armor's Helmet Has Updated Visor Functionality
Amazon's Brotherhood of Steel can expect to get a breath of fresh air
One of the most obvious and significant additions to the functionality of the power armor Amazon has added are the capabilities of the helmet's visor. Other than simply making the eye slits bigger, allowing Brotherhood of Steel (and the actors playing them) a better field of view, the helmet has been shown to partially lift up, which allows the wearer's bare face to be exposed to the environment. This functionality could serve a narrative purpose, better allowing actors to emote while wearing the armor or giving s a chance to talk to their comrades face to face.
3 The Fallout Series Will Re-Introduce The T-60 Power Armor To California
In the games' timeline, the particular model's appearance would be anachronistic
The Fallout series has actually featured multiple different named models of power armor that differ from game to game, depending on the point in time and setting of a given title. The original T-51 power armor was made famous in Fallout 1 and Fallout 2, featured on the cover of the former, identifiable by its narrower visor and pointed pauldrons. Meanwhile, the T-60, retroactively added in Fallout 3, has become the face of the series since, featuring a larger visor, rounded pauldrons, and a more mechanically complex design.
The T-60, retroactively added in Fallout 3, has become the face of the series.
Having taken more inspiration from the recent games, the Fallout series' power armor appears to be the T-60. That being said, the presence of the T-60 in California runs counter to the precedent set in the games, in which Brotherhood of Steel chapters on the West Coast were stuck with the older T-51 and T-51b models. However, the clarification of the Fallout show's timeline compared to the games may suggest that the Brotherhood of Steel has since brought T-60 models from the East Coast explaining this lore discrepancy.
2 Amazon's Fallout Armor Strikes A Middle Ground In Size
The series' armor isn't quite the exact size of any game
The different Fallout games have had radically different approaches when it came to determining the size power armor should be. Up until Fallout: New Vegas, armor was treated as clothing, with relatively small, knight-like suits that could be mixed and matched with any other accessories the player could find. From Fallout 4 onward, power armor was instead more like a vehicle, with bulky, mech-like armor that required fusion cores to operate. The Amazon show seems to be striking a delicate balance between the two, smaller than the likes of Fallout 4's armor while certainly not being mere clothing.
1 The TV Show's Power Armor Has Iron Man-Esque Wrist Jets
The humble jetpack seems to have been replaced
Flying power armor is nothing new to the Fallout series, with Fallout 4 introducing the jetpack attachment as a way to add some aerial superiority to the already versatile mechanized cavalry. Amazon Prime Video has opted to replace the jetpack with a flight system more reminiscent of the many suits of armor used by Iron Man, with small jump jets instead attached to the 's arms, allowing for greater control and maneuverability in the air. While the resulting visual might not be quite as cool as the classic jetpack, it is an ittedly more realistic way for Fallout to handle personal flight.
