A theory about the Jacob Kowalski (Dan Fogler) is getting a wand in the film. Since Jacob has essentially been a representative for the non-magical audience through two Fantastic Beasts films, the development is surprising. However, it's not unheard of for Muggles to pick up a wand in various Harry Potter lore, though non-magical people couldn't necessarily control their powerful outbursts.
Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore will look to improve on the franchise's dwindling box office numbers. Though the first movie in the franchise, 2016's Crimes of Grindelwald had the lowest box office for any live-action film in the Harry Potter canon.
Thanks to Jacob Kowalski receiving a wand, fans are theorizing that he's secretly a wizard in Fantastic Beasts, which would fix a plot hole in the Harry Potter universe. Though Muggles can pick up wands in the world of Harry Potter, they shouldn't be able to control them. However, Kowalski seems to cast a spell at the end of the Secrets of Dumbledore trailer. Additionally, in Crimes of Grindelwald, Kowalski appears to look into a crystal ball and see visions, which shouldn't be possible based on the Harry Potter novels. If Kowalski is a secret wizard, these problems all apparate away.
When it comes to Jacob Kowalski, Fantastic Beasts seems to commit continuity errors constantly. For example, in J.K. Rowling's Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban novel, Professor Trelawney tells her class that crystal gazing is a "refined art," and she doesn't expect them to see anything when they first peer into a crystal ball. However, Kowalski, who's supposedly non-magical, walks right up to Nicolas Flamel's crystal ball in Crimes of Grindlewald and sees various visions, including an image of a bird at the Lestrange Tomb. Additionally, wands channel a wizard's magic and should act erratically when Muggles use them. But Kowalski is right at home waving around his wand in the trailer. He even asks Jude Law's Dumbledore if he can keep the magical item.
Of course, Fantastic Beasts doesn't appear to have qualms retconning Harry Potter. Fans of the franchise cried foul over Crimes of Grindlewald revealing that Ezra Miller's character was secretly an Albus Dumbledore relative named Aurelius Dumbledore. Additionally, the second film in the franchise shows Voldemort's snake, Nagini, was a Maledictus the whole time. With so many drastic changes already in Fantastic Beasts, the franchise could also retcon the hold that Muggles have over magic, which would likely cause more controversy with fans. However, making Kowalski a wizard, or giving him a secret connection to the Wizarding World, would solve many Harry Potter problems.
