Warning: contains potential spoilers for Ultimate Wolverine #2!

It’s happening: Marvel is reviving one of its sickest, most depraved villains ever, and not even Wolverine is prepared. The Maker, while relatively new to the Marvel Universe, has leaped to become one of the publisher’s premiere villains, and one of the architects behind its new Ultimate Universe. Now, in a preview for Ultimate Wolverine #2, the Maker attacks the Weapon Plus project, altering Wolverine’s destiny.

Ultimate Wolverine #2 will be written by Chris Condon and drawn by Alessandro Cappuccio. The preview opens at an unidentified facility in America, revealed to be the Ultimate Universe’s version of the Weapon Plus project–only here it is denied funding and is struggling to get by. A sole researcher laments his fortunes, simultaneously eyeing a picture of Logan, a potential test subject. Then, the Maker arrives, killing the researcher and setting fire to the facility, telling the scientist a better world is “one that [he is] not in.” The Weapon Plus project is seemingly no more.

The preview ends there, leaving fans wondering how a new version of Wolverine could come about without the Weapon Plus project. On Earth-616, the Weapon Plus project took many forms. Designed to protect humanity from mutants, the Weapon Plus project has used many test subjects across its various iterations. The most famous is Wolverine, who was part of the tenth version of it, called “Weapon X.” Weapon X famously gave Wolverine his adamantium skeleton. Other prominent Weapon Plus alumni include Captain America, who was one of the first test subjects, as well as Deadpool and Fantomex.

The various offshoots of the Weapon Plus Project have had a profound impact on Earth-616, which gives the Maker all the reasons he needs to destroy it. The Maker is Reed Richards from the first Ultimate Universe. Unlike his 616 counterpart, the Maker has no moral code: he is nothing but a cold, ruthless intellect. He escapes his prison on Earth-616, absconding to another world in the multiverse, where he begins altering the flow of history to suit his own ends. He created a Ruling Council who oversaw the affairs of his Earth, which he conquered stealthily.

The New Ultimates Need to Recruit Ultimate Wolverine

Ultimate Wolverine aka the Winter Soldier crouching in the snow.

616 Wolverine was a pawn of the global elites, and this new Ultimate version is no different, being a tool of the Maker and his Ruling Council.

Yet, despite the apparent lack of a Weapon Plus Project in this new Ultimate Universe, there is still Wolverine. He is still a killing machine, and has been likened to the Winter Soldier. 616 Wolverine was a pawn of the global elites, and this new Ultimate version is no different, being a tool of the Maker and his Ruling Council. Only now is Ultimate Wolverine starting to question the will of the Maker. Other Wolverines have had second thoughts about their way of life in the past, and the Ultimate version stands at the beginning of that journey.

And this preview for Ultimate Wolverine #2 shows how that journey began, and it was all thanks, in this universe, to the Maker. While the Maker’s rule has been absolute, cracks in the foundation are starting to appear: a ragtag team of rebels, led by Tony Stark and this universe’s Reed Richards, have formed a new version of the Ultimates to counter the Maker and liberate their world. Once Ultimate Wolverine finally sheds the Maker’s influence, he can be a powerful ally in stopping Marvel’s sickest villain.
