The adventures of Marvel's First Family, the Fantastic Four, have taken them to other dimensions, the far reaches of outer space, subterranea, and even the past to 1936 Berlin. Though Doctor Doom and Galactus have yet to make their presence known during this time period, there exists an even greater villain in the vicious leader of the Nazi party... Adolf Hitler.
Following a battle the original android Human Torch (Jim Hammond) do not yet exist. Alongside the trio of adventurers is S.H.I.E.L.D. director Nick Fury, who unbeknownst to the Fantastic Four, has a mission of his own to complete.
As what tends to be the case with time travel, killing Hitler can potentially set into motion a host of events which could prove catastrophic for the Fantastic Four, Fury, and Earth as a whole. If Nick Fury is allowed to kill Hitler, who's to say Steve Rogers will eventually become the star-spangled man with a plan Captain America? But if Fury does successfully kill Hitler, then future threats to mankind such as Magneto may never even materialize in the first place.
For Nick Fury, there is perhaps nothing more important than taking down Hitler and his Nazi empire. Fury's early career as leader of the Howling Commandos combat unit saw the future super-spy lose many close loved ones to the Third Reich. Hitler will be personally responsible for the deaths of millions of innocent people in the years to come, a revolting display of initial supervillainy at work. But as righteous as Fury's intentions may be, there is a major complication to the death of someone even as evil as Hitler.
John Byrne's Fantastic Four #292, The Man Who Dreamed the World, is far from Adolf Hitler's first major appearance in the Marvel Comics continuity. Hitler played an instrumental role as a largely background presence for Captain America in Joe Simon and Jack Kirby's titular golden age run of the character. Hitler would even eventually cross paths with the Fantastic Four later down the line, taking up the identity of the villain the Hate Monger in Fantastic Four #21. Hitler is one of the greatest forces of evil the Earth has ever seen, not a super soldier, a mutant, or a cosmic being, but a human.
