The Super-Skrull has been one of the the dreaded Annihilation Wave, there's one power the Fantastic Four possess that he never will, giving the team an edge against its enemies.

Super-Skrull discusses the Fantastic Four's unique advantage in Annihilation: Super-Skrull #3 by Javier Grillo-Marxuach and Greg Titus. In the issue, Kl'rt continues his quest to destroy the Harvester of Sorrow, a planet-killing weapon that will soon be used to destroy the homeworld of Kl'rt's son. The Super-Skrull says the experience has made him realize why he can never beat the Fantastic Four: "Every time they fight, it is for one another."

Super-Skrull Realizes Family Is the Fantastic Four's Hidden Power

As the Negative Zone's Annihilus sweeps his army across planets as part of his galactic conquest, Kl'rt separates himself from the Skrull army in an attempt to save the homeworld of his son, Sarnogg. Along the way, the Super-Skrull raises an army consisting of fellow Skrull R'Kin and freed prisoners Praxagora and Preak, among others. Though Kl'rt is tragically unable to save the Skrull planet Zaragz'na or his son after being betrayed by R'Kin, the experience of fighting for his son rather than simply fighting against his enemies taught him of the Fantastic Four's true strength. Kl'rt would demonstrate this by sacrificing himself during Annihilation: Super Skrull #4, though he was later revived.

The Fantastic Four Are More Than Their Powers

fantastic four as a family

Super-Skrull's speech explains why the longtime Fantastic Four villain has never been able to fully best Marvel's First Family. Despite possessing each of the team's individual abilities - stretching, fire, strength, invisibility and force fields, as well as his own hypnotic gaze - Kl'rt fails to grasp the power of the team's unity and love for one another. As the Super-Skrull puts it, there is "Not a molecule of ruthlessness or deceit in any of them. But they are a family." Though Super-Skrull is more powerful than the team, it makes sense that he's never been able to beat the group in a four-on-one fight. This added aspect, however, makes his repeated defeat even more logical, as Kl'rt fails to fight for his own victory as hard as the four fight for each other's safety.

Super-Skrull's assessment demonstrates a core sentiment behind the Fantastic Four: they're not superheroes. At least, not first. The group has long been described as a band of adventurers and explorers, held together by their status of a family. While they certainly behave like superheroes and have saved the world countless times over, Marvel's First Family are a family first and superheroes second, setting them apart from other Marvel heroes. Super-Skrull may have the powers of the Fantastic Four, but the team's bond is what makes them truly powerful - something that, as a warrior and zealot, he can't match.
