Far Cry movie or TV show adaptation and what is needed to get it made. The first-person shooter franchise first launched in early 2004 with Crytek's eponymous title centered on a former American special forces operative who fights through a mysterious tropical island to rescue a journalist he was escorting to the island who went missing after their boat was destroyed by mercenaries. The subsequent sequels would put players in the shoes of new characters in completely different settings, with very minimal narrative or chronological ties between each title.

Since launching, the Far Cry franchise has been a hit for publisher Ubisoft, receiving generally positive reviews for the open-world settings of the games while the stories and gameplay mechanics have received largely mixed reviews throughout. The series also crossed the 50 million units sold mark in 2019, with Far Cry 5 setting a franchise record of over $310 million grossed in the first week of sales, which equates to an estimated 5.16 million copies sold. Some fans have been eager to see a Far Cry adaptation come to life over the years, though one close to the franchise itself is working in earnest to get one made.

In time for the release of the Far Cry 6 DLC "Vaas: Insanity," Mando spoke with Dan Allen Gaming to discuss the potential for a Far Cry adaptation. Mando revealed he has written a script draft for a Far Cry movie or TV show that could be suited to Vaas or another character, but expressed his hope to have it be centered on the former and what the chances are it could be made. See what Mando said below:

"I know the fans have been asking for it for a while and I've been teasing about it, the truth is I have something written that I really like. We haven't had those conversations in depth, I've spoken about it to Ubisoft a few times, they've responded a few times, but we've never really sat down and talked about it. I think a lot of it will depend on the fans. I have this script that could be adaptable to Vaas or to another character, I'd like to do it as Vaas, it's something that I've been thinking about for a while. I really enjoy working with Ubisoft, I think they're an incredible company.

This character is so unique in that he does work on a video game, that's proven, and it does work on the live-action, that's proven. He translates really well and that's a rarity in video games, so the reality is there's a potential for a bigger picture thing where you could have both [film and TV]. If it's done, it has to be done really well, and to me, the idea would be to back it up a little bit and to do an origin thing. I think you go back even before the scar and the haircut, you go back and you try to get him at that stage where you can start simmering and start building. I've got ideas, so we'll see."

Old Man Vaas Far Cry 6 Insanity DLC

The Far Cry franchise has received one feature adaptation since launching with the eponymous film from Uwe Boll starring Til Schweiger as the protagonist of the first game. As with Boll's other video game adaptations, the film was a critical and commercial failure, grossing just over $743k against a production budget of $30 million. Since making his debut in Far Cry 3, Vaas has stood out as players' favorite character in the franchise as well as one of the best antagonists in video games, much of which has been attributed to Mando's portrayal of the unhinged pirate.

Those who have been eager to see another live-action Far Cry adaptation centered on Vaas after the well-received webseries starring Mando as the character tied to Far Cry 3 are sure to be excited to hear of the star's efforts to get an adaptation off the ground by bringing his voice to the scripting. Some fans may find hesitation in his thoughts on exploring the character's origin story instead of continuing from his survival in the Far Cry 6 DLC. Though given the level of involvement Mando had in developing the character for Far Cry 3 and his work on initially dismissed prequel series, Better Call Saul, he clearly has all the experience needed to dive into this angle from a satisfying perspective.
