During the Ubisoft Forward pre-show earlier today, Ubisoft revealed that players will soon have the opportunity to dive back into the world of Far Cry 3 and take on Vaas once again. The third entry in the Far Cry franchise is the entry that many fans most fondly, and it cemented the formula that has brought the games to great heights in the intervening years. Part of that success is because of Vaas, an engaging villainous character that really drove the player through the tropical island paradise of the Rook Islands.
Not only was Vaas a threatening presence, but he also showed up throughout the game in ways that final bosses just typically didn't in 2012. Eight years later, many developers have learned the lessons of Far Cry 3, but that doesn't stop people from raising the game up as a bastion of unique storytelling. Ever since his untimely demise in his only appearance, fans have assumed he would pop up again. Despite those expectations, Far Cry has continued to be off-kilter, presenting mostly disconnected stories with a thin throughline if you look hard enough. Now that fans have been waiting years for Vaas to return to the franchise in some form, and Ubisoft has provided a stopgap measure with this VR title.

Groups will fight through waves of pirates hunting them for sport and venture further into the jungle before a final showdown with Vaas himself.
The experience will last thirty minutes and is one of eight offerings from Zero Latency. Experiences at the venue typically cost $50, although exact pricing details for Far Cry VR: Dive Into Insanity haven't been shared at this time. Locations in the US include in Orlando on International Drive, at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, and Rancho Cucamonga, California.
This also isn't the first time that Ubisoft has dealt in location-based VR. Earlier this year, Prince of Persia also returned in this form, although at a different set of venues. Ubisoft BluByte has made three such virtual reality escape rooms, all fitting into three hundred bespoke locations around the globe.
For many Far Cry fans, this is not the return they wanted for Far Cry 3's intriguing villain. In fact, many spread rumors that Vaas was going to be a centerpiece of the Far Cry 6, likely because they're desperate for his return to the franchise. Vaas's sustained popularity and the winding narrative of the series means that it's still very possible that he'll pop up at some point in the future in a mainline entry. Far Cry is still a very popular part of the Ubisoft portfolio, so the publisher has plenty of time to keep creating unique entries before they're forced to dive into nostalgia.
