Far Side comics aren’t just examples of absurdist humor, but also dark humor, especially those that poke fun at certain topics - like flying in/piloting an airplane.
There’s practically an entire catalog of Far Side comics focused solely on airplanes, as there is so much to work with in of taking an average, everyday thing like flying and turning it into an absurd (normally comically tragic) one- adventure. And a great number of those Far Side comics about airplanes specifically focus on the pilots, and these pilots are the absolute worst ones in the world. Of them all, these are the 10 all-time most hilarious Far Side comics starring the world’s worst pilots!
10 Mountain Goat
These Far Side Pilots Don’t Realize They’re About to Fly Right Into a Mountain
Two pilots are flying their plane through a cloudy sky when they suddenly see a mountain goat standing in the middle of the clouds. One of the pilots turns to his copilot and expresses a bit of concern, but not for the reasons he should. The pilot was confused as to how a goat had found its way up in the sky amid the clouds, without pausing to consider for even a moment that the goat might not be in the clouds, but he and his co-pilot were about to fly directly into the side of a mountain.
Not only is the fact that these pilots are about to crash into a mountain a clear indication that they are some of the worst pilots in the world, but also the fact that at least one of them thought it was possible - albeit a bit peculiar - that a goat could stand in the clouds. Pilots are supposed to know one cannot stand on clouds - indeed, they fly through clouds every day. But, these Far Side pilots are the worst, so it's no surprise that they didn't know that.
9 Losing His Hat
This Far Side Pilot is More Concerned About His Hat Than the Real Problem
In this Far Side comic, the plane is going down, no two ways about it. The entire top of the cockpit is gone, and the pilots are still trying to fly and land the plane safely, despite the insanely fast wind blowing directly in their faces without any protection whatsoever. All-in-all, it doesn't look good for the engers on this plane, or the pilots trying to fly it. But, what is one of the pilots the most concerned about? Losing his hat.
This pilot only cares about his hat, which has obviously blown away. He's not fully focused on the dire situation at hand, making him easily one of the worst pilots in both The Far Side and the world - and that's not even going into how these pilots managed to lose the top of their cockpit!
8 Freezing Under Pressure
This Far Side Pilot is So Bad, He’s Literally a Snowman
Another plane emergency is happening in The Far Side, as this airplane is also about to crash, just like the previous ones on this list. One of the plane's engines is on fire, and the pilots in the cockpit are absolutely freaking out. Well, one of them is, as the other one has become so stunned by the fear of crashing that they've gone completely frozen. Literally, the copilot turned into a snowman.
What's literally happening in this Far Side comic is left a bit ambiguous. Did this copilot get so scared that he literally transformed into a snowman, as that's how 'frozen' he became in the face of almost certain death? Or did the airline actually hire a snowman - one that doesn't even seem to be sentient? But, in this case, it doesn't really matter which one is the truth, as this snowman pilot is terrible no matter what.
7 Dumbo Attacks
These Far Side Pilots are Taken Out by Dumbo
These two Far Side pilots are flying their plane; just a normal, average day at work for them. When, suddenly, out of nowhere, a giant flying elephant comes out of the sky with a mean look on his face, and murderous intent burning behind his eyes. The elephant is none other than Dumbo (yep, Disney's Dumbo), and he's using his ears to fly just like in the movie. However, this version of Dumbo is a bit more terrifying, as he's decided to destroy as many airplanes as possible for seemingly no reason at all.
Anyone who's seen Dumbo knows that he has every reason to hate humans, but this is taking his deep-seated hatred a bit too far. And, to be fair, the pilots he's attacking aren't bad pilots, they're just in the wrong place at the wrong time. But, in Dumbo's eyes, these pilots - along with every human on Earth - are bad people, which is how the flying elephant justifies killing them.
6 Alien Pilot
This Far Side Pilot isn't Even from Earth, & They’re Still Terrible
This Far Side comic seems like it's pulled straight from a Sci-Fi action movie - or, perhaps a comedy, as it shows a human pilot and an alien pilot floating down to Earth with their respective parachutes after crashing their crafts into each other. While it would be easy to blame both parties for this mid-air collision, gut instinct insists that this whole situation was the alien's fault.
Assuming this alien has cloaking technology (indeed, it has interstellar technology, so cloaking isn't a stretch by any means), it's fair to also assume that the human pilot didn't even see the UFO. The alien pilot should have ed for the human pilot, and done a better job at avoiding a crash. In other words, this pilot isn't just one of the worst in the world; it's the worst out of this world, too.
5 ACME Wingbaby
The Far Side Pilots for This Plane have Dangerous Ways of Handling Crying Babies
A baby is hanging from one of the wings of a plane, and the engers looking out their windows at him don't seem bothered by it at all. Apparently, that's the new way to deal with crying babies on an airplane, which is something that is famously annoying. The pilots of this plane gave the go-ahead to have "ACME Wingbaby" used on those crying babies, which seems to be a super-strong adhesive.
While it seems like this practice is socially acceptable, allowing a baby to hang from the wing of a plane as it's flying through the air is something the pilot of that plane should not allow to happen, and any pilot who does allow something like that to happen is a pretty terrible pilot, indeed.
4 Lost Lenses
These Far Side Pilots Both Lost Their Lenses at the Same Time
Neither pilot on this plane is actually flying the plane, as both of them seem to have lost their lenses. This is alarming for a number of reasons. Not only is there no one with their hand on the wheel at this moment in time, but if these pilots don't find their s, there will be no one to land the plane.
Plus, the fact that neither of them had a backup pair of glasses is proof that these Far Side pilots are pretty terrible at their jobs, and they are putting their engers at risk.
3 Pretending to Fly
This Far Side Pilot is Pretending to Fly… While He’s Actually Flying
In an instance where The Far Side doesn't even need to add a caption, and just gives readers the image by itself, readers can see a pilot flying a plane all by himself in the cockpit - but he's not paying attention to the controls. Instead, this pilot is standing close to the window, his arms raised on either side of his body, and he's swaying back and forth as if pretending to fly - while he's actually flying.
This pilot is literally flying a plane, but that's not enough for him. He wants to imagine the sensation of actually lifting himself off the ground and soaring through the sky without the need for an aircraft. Granted, that's something many people have fantasized about, but doing so while piloting a plane is not the time to do it.
2 Causing a Panic
This Far Side Pilot Causes a Panic for No Reason
As these pilots are flying a commercial aircraft, one of them sees a light that he mistakenly thinks is the fuel light, indicating that the plane is out of fuel and that it is about to go down. The pilot starts panicking immediately, screaming, "We're all going to die!". But then, the pilot realized that the button he was looking at was the intercom, and the light was on because it was in use. In other words, the engers heard the pilot's freak-out, and now they all think they're in mortal danger.
The number one thing a pilot is supposed to do in an emergency situation is to remain calm and try to find a solution. This pilot did the exact opposite of that, as not only was there no emergency, but he definitely did not remain calm.
1 Turbulence
These Far Side Pilots Create Their Own Turbulence (for Fun)
These pilots are probably the worst ones of the bunch in The Far Side. They're not reacting poorly to a horrible situation like the majority of these terrible pilots. Instead, they're manufacturing a potentially dangerous situation for no other reason than for the fun of it. The pilots tell their engers that they're experiencing turbulence, when, in fact, they're just steering the plane in a jerky manner, laughing like children all the while.
Pilots have their engers' lives in their hands, and these two pilots abused that responsibility for nothing more than a dumb laugh, making them a few of the worst pilots in The Far Side.
