This article contains major spoilers for F9 (Fast and Furious 9)
It’s remarkable how the F9 had a number of shocks in store. These weren’t strictly related to the stunts on hand either, as character decisions were of the same variety that certainly blindsided more than a few fans.

Of course, the premise of Dominic Toretto’s previously unknown brother, Jakob, showing up as a rogue agent in pursuit of the Aries device’s is something that viewers didn’t expect, meaning there were a lot more surprises to come for those who checked out the ninth installment of this long-running blockbuster series.
Dom: Drive Over A Cliff To Slingshot His Car
Dom has taken part in a number of dangerous stunts over the years, yet the riskiest move he has ever played may have been in F9’s opening. Here, he threw caution into the wind by outright driving his car off a cliff to evade his enemies.
His plan was to use the cable that had accidentally become attached to the car as a way to slingshot him and Letty across a cliff, which actually ended up working as the car landed on the opposite side. It was a sheer move out of desperation and truly a sight to see as Dom went to such great lengths to survive.
Letty: it Her Conflict Over Preferring To Remain In The Fight
Although Letty isn't as involved in action sequences as the other main characters, she usually does display a brave attitude by taking on the bad guys. However, her ission in F9 that she found peace in chaos was something unexpected.
She said this to Mia when the two discussed where they stood in life, with Letty claiming that laying low was a struggle after all the fights she had engaged in. Fans were made to believe that Letty wanted to have a normal life, but she surprisingly confessed otherwise.
Mia: Reveal That She Broke The Law To Track Jakob By Herself
In the case of Mia, her most shocking move happened chronologically before the events of both the original and reboot series. She revealed that Jakob had actually remained in with her for a while, even after his exile, and that Mia had gone to great lengths to find him once he disappeared altogether.
To this end, she broke into police records back when she was only 16, much to Letty’s surprise as she couldn’t fathom Mia would do such a thing and at such a young age. Considering Mia was always the morally straight character of the family, her act of breaking the law as a teenager was far from expected.
Roman & Tej: Head To Space And Actually Survive
It seemed as if the Fast & Furious may have peaked in of outrageousness in the eighth movie, but F9 had a lot more in store. Roman and Tej became the first of the group who could claim to be spacemen, as they ended up going to space.
Even more stunning is the fact that they didn’t even do it in a spaceship, as Roman and Tej used a car with a rocket strapped to it in order to leave Earth. Even for a series so out of touch with realism like Fast & Furious, it was unbelievable to see Tej and Roman actually pull this feat off.
Ramsey: Take Charge Behind The Wheel
For any other character, driving a car is second nature as the series is about cars in general. However, Ramsey spent the previous two movies firmly in enger seats as she wanted nothing to do with being part of the main action.
This is why it was a surprise to see her not only get directly involved in the conflict but also be the one behind the wheel. This came about due to Roman and Tej being apprehended by Jakob’s men, prompting Ramsey to overcome her fear of driving and take control of the truck.
Jakob: Abandon His Plan In Order To Assist Dom
Jakob had one of the most noteworthy arcs in the movie that saw him go from just the villain into a more sympathetic character. After spending the majority of the story looking to activate the Aries device, Jakob was betrayed by his men and could have cut his losses.
However, Jakob ended up returning to the fray in order to assist Dom in bringing down his own plan and foiled the activation of Aries as a result. This was a move that didn’t seem to be on the cards as Jakob had claimed he wanted nothing to do with Dom anymore, yet he returned to help his brother by the climax.
Han: Confront Shaw By Himself
Deckard Shaw’s popularity saw him transition into leading status spin-off but fans continued to judge him for killing Han. By F9’s conclusion, Han had not only returned, he went so far as to confront Shaw by himself.
This was shocking not only due to Han unexpectedly arriving at the doorstep of the man who had attempted to kill him but also because he had avoided Shaw for so long, yet was now approaching him without any backup. It was easily the biggest sequel hook that F9 could have left viewers with.
Mr. Nobody: Pull Off The Staging Of Han's Death
Although Mr. Nobody was absent during the present-day events of F9, he had it in him to shock audiences regardless. This was through the mysterious way with which he pulled off Han’s “death,” as the latter revealed that it was Mr. Nobody who orchestrated the whole thing.
The shocking aspect comes from how it was unexplainable the way Mr. Nobody conducted the event, with Han seemingly teleported from the crash over to where Mr. Nobody stood several floors above in a nearby building.
Cipher: Accept Her Defeat
For a character like Cipher, who is relentless in her pursuit, it didn’t seem as if she would be prepared to walk away unless she was the winner. However, she did just that in the conclusion of F9 after her attempt to kill Dom didn’t work out.
Equally as shocking was the reveal that Cipher was never in the drone that was gunning for Dom, as it was shown that she’d been controlling it remotely. Rather than have one of her trademark one-liners and steely-eyed purpose, Cipher showed a rare moment of vulnerability as she realized Dom had one-upped her once again.
Dom: Exiled His Own Brother
F9 brought the biggest change in Dom’s character, with the reveal that his firm belief in family wasn’t all that resolute. This was through flashbacks to his youth, where he was the one to banish Jakob from their neighborhood when Dom believed that his brother had caused their father’s demise.
Dom is a person big on giving people second chances, so it was a shock to see him treat his own brother in such a manner as he had no room in him to even hear Jakob out. After it turned out that their father’s death was his own fault, Dom’s actions became even more shocking in retrospect as he assumed the worst in Jakob.
