Jakob Torretto Is On The Run - And Can Return

Jakob Toretto spends most of Fast and Furious 9 as the main villain, but he switches sides in the end to set up his future as an ally. After Dom exiled him from the family for his role in their father's death, Jakob spent his entire life training to be an exceptional spy, fighter, and driver. This led him to work with Mr. Nobody (Kurt Russell) before making a more villainous turn in an effort to gain the power he always wanted and finally step out of Dom's shadow. However, Jakob's business partners turn on him to team up with Cipher (Charlize Theron) instead. This leads Jakob to decide to work with Dom and his crew to take down the very global threat he helped create. Jakob and Dom use the powerful magnets to flip a giant truck and disable Project Ares.

Once the mission is complete, Dom seemingly forgives Jakob and gives his brother a new lease on life. Dom gives Jakob the keys to a 10-second car, so he can have a second chance, which is a callback to Brian O'Connor (Paul Walker) doing the same for Dom at the end of The Fast and the Furious. After getting a hug from Mia Toretto (Jordana Brewster), Jakob drives away and is on the run due to his role in what recently transpired. Although Jakob doesn't make a pitstop at the Toretto family dinner at the end of Fast and Furious 9, it is clear that he's on a redemptive path.

Cipher Is Set Up As The Villain For Fast X

F9's ending sets up Cipher to be the main villain of Fast X, and possibly beyond. The manipulative and genius hacker was the primary antagonist in The Fate of the Furious, but she managed to escape and survive. Cipher returns in Fast and Furious 9 as a lurking threat to Jakob. She is locked in a containment cell for most of the movie but eventually convinces his business partners to work with her and turn on him. Once Cipher is in control of the operation, she does everything in her power to prevent Dom, his crew, and Jakob from stopping the Project Ares . Even after they successfully thwart her global takeover scheme, she pilots a drone to try and kill them. However, Dom manages to destroy the drone and keep himself and his family safe.

The frustrated Cipher is last seen in Fast and Furious 9 walking away from the drone piloting machine, and her exit reads as though she's regrouping for another attack. However, Fast X takes a different track with Cipher. Instead of keeping her as a villain, the tenth film continues the franchise's tradition of turning villains into allies. Cipher turns up early in Fast X to warn Dom about Dante Reyes (Jason Momoa). Towards the end of the movie, Cipher escapes from Dante's prison with Letty, working alongside her former enemy. Though Cipher is an anti-hero in Fast X, it's not clear what side she will be on in future installments.

Brian O'Connor Still Hangs Out With The Family

Paul Walker as Brian driving a car in Fast and Furious.

The Fast & Furious franchise had to figure out what to do with Brian O'Connor following Paul Walker's death during the production of Furious 7. That movie kept him alive and gave Walker a moving final appearance on the big screen. Fast and Furious 9 confirms that Brian is still alive in the universe and has settled down to be a father, but it also goes a step further. The movie explains that he is the one watching his and Mia's kids while she gets involved in the search for Jakob. At the very end of Fast and Furious 9, the movie shows that Brian still hangs out with Dom and the crew, as his blue Skyline pulls into the driveway of the Toretto's original home.

The movie cuts to the credits before Brian is shown on screen, but the implication is significant. While Walker only appears in archival footage in Fast X, those involved with the franchise have teased that there is a chance Brian will return using similar techniques that Furious 7 did to complete his role after Walker's ing. Fast and Furious 9 confirming that Brian is still hanging out with the family plants the seeds for an actual appearance in future films.

The post-credits scene for Fast and Furious 9 gives fans an exciting tease as it pertains to the #JusticeForHan movement. The scene brings Jason Statham back as Deckard Shaw for a quick cameo, as he practices his fighting using a literal human punching bag. He has to stop momentarily when someone knocks on his door, and Deckard is shocked to see Han alive and standing there when he opens it. F9's post-credits scene is setting up a future story where Han could get justice for Deckard for attempting to kill him.

What does the future hold for the Fast & Furious franchise after F9? Aside from entries in The Fast Saga, the series has more spinoffs in the works.

Han's death originally happened in Fast & Furious: Tokyo Drift but the franchise changed the timeline to bring him back for prequels. His death is shown at the end of Fast & Furious 6, where it is revealed that Deckard killed him in an act of revenge for what Dom and his crew did to Owen Shaw. This was supposed to be the end of Han's story, but the redemption story given to Deckard in The Fate of the Furious left fans calling for the franchise to deliver #JusticeForHan.

F9's post-credits scene is paid off in Fast X when Deckard and Han are forced to work together against Dante. Since Fast and Furious 9 revealed Mr. Nobody helped fake Han's death, Han and Deckard are now on the same team, despite their checkered history.
