There's a number of film tropes that might pop up every now and then and 9 appears to be borrowing from a classic one. The idea of a long lost sibling suddenly re-appearing in the protagonist's life to cause chaos has been used countless times.
While it remains to be seen how F9 will tackle the relationship, there's a number of other examples from throughout cinematic history that demonstrate what could go down when secret siblings are reunited for the first time. Whether they were twins separated at birth or left to grow up in completely different worlds, at some stage they always find one another again; for better or worse.
Honorable Mention: Black Panther (2018)
While they aren't brothers, it's difficult to ignore this storyline which saw the King of Wakanda come to learn about a new threat to the throne; his cousin Killmonger. The rivalry between the two that formed was legendary, with Killmonger stealing every scene he was in.
The two had a number of brutal battles for the throne but it was ultimately T'Challa who would rise to the challenge and continue his rule. This was a plot that drew audiences into Black Panther and was very reminiscent of classics like Hamlet and The Lion King.
Fast And The Furious 9 (2021)
Of course, the inspiration behind this exploration is the reveal that Dom Toretto actually has a secret brother who is set to star in the next Fast film, portrayed by John Cena. The franchise is all about family and this is certainly no exception.
The two appear to be set up as rivals to one another, although if the timeline of the rest of the series is anything to go by, usually well known enemies become allies by the following film. It remains to be seen exactly what the issue between the two really is though and why the brothers have only just been unveiled to audiences.
Austin Powers In Goldmember (2002)
The greatest danger to Austin Powers is of course the maniacal Dr. Evil. With his mad plots and sinister yet hilarious quotes, Dr. Evil has consistently been a thorn in Powers' side. In a true James Bond twist though, Powers and Evil were revealed to be brothers!
It's not that surprising considering the same actor, Mike Myers, portrays both characters but it certainly did add an extra wrinkle into this comedy for the ages. Their relationship is a complicated one, with their conflict largely fuelled by Dr. Evil's obsession with world domination.
Thor: Ragnarok (2017)
The comic books have seen Thor have to deal with his siblings and he has oh so many. Loki is perhaps the most famous of the bunch, but his alliance with Balder has also become quite iconic. For Thor: Ragnarok a new threat emerged from the god of thunder's past; one he never knew about.
Hela was every bit as evil as Loki, but without the moral com to truly redeem her. Combining the magic of Frigga and Loki with the power of Odin and the strength of Thor, Hela was really unstoppable. This secret sister ultimately saw to the destruction of Asgard in a sequel that took the franchise to the next level.
Half Brothers (2020)
Half Brothers is an indie film that really is what the title suggests. When their father is dying, his sons come to learn that they each have a half brother. They start out on a quest which their dad has created for them, slowly coming to learn more about one another.
They are from completely different worlds, but they are family. As the journey unfolds they come to gain respect and acceptance for each other, with this heart-warming and wacky comedy taking quite a different approach to the trope.
Star Wars: The Return Of The Jedi (1983)
Some of the biggest twists in the Star Wars franchise are based around family. The reveal that Luke's father is Darth Vader was one for the history books, although it shouldn't overshadow the fact that Luke and Leia were finally confirmed to be twins.
Separated at birth for their own protection, Pe their mother died during childbirth and they remained at constant risk thanks to Vader's rise in the Empire. Some awkward scenes aside, the Star Wars legacy is partially built on the heroic moments of these siblings working alongside one another.
The Parent Trap (1998)
The Parent Trap plays on one of the oldest tropes; two twins who never knew the other existed, swapping lives or trying to bring their family back together. It's been done many times, but the Lindsey Lohan version still remains one that's fondly ed.
With Lohan portraying both sisters, the plan was on to try and get their parents to fall in love with one another. It's a feel-good movie and yet another demonstration of how many ways this simple premise can be used.
Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes Of Grindelwald (2018)
The Fantastic Beasts franchise began as a way to explore the fun adventures of Newt Scamander, a completely unique hero for the big screen. It very quickly evolved into the narrative surrounding the Wizarding War though and the arrival of Grindelwald.
Its much-debated sequel made the startling revelation that Dumbledore actually had a secret brother all of this time. Fans don't truly know if Aurelius Dumbledore is a true relative to Albus, but nonetheless, the initial reveal was met with a lot of criticism.
Twins (1988)
Twins really shouldn't work. Yet it really does. The combination of Danny Devito and Arnold Schwarzenegger is already brilliant casting, but couple that with the comedic premise that they are actually twin brothers and there's a winner in the works.
The product of genetic experiments, these twins shouldn't even know that the other one exists, but they are brought together once again from two very different worlds. With Arnold coming from a relatively normal upbringing, he's shocked to discover his brother is actually a small-time criminal.
Halloween 2 (1981)
There's nothing worse than being hunted down by Michael Myers in this Halloween themed horror universe. Except perhaps being related to him. Halloween II showed audiences that Myers' number one target happened to be his very own sister.
Laurie Strode is the main protagonist of the series and unfortunately shares this very personal connection with the masked murderer. The reveal only increases the tension of what could happen and begs the question as to how this sibling relationship went so wrong.
