The new Fast and Furious 9 trailer is finally here, and it's loaded with action, family, and big story reveals for what’s to come. The film stars an ensemble cast composed of series regulars like Vin Diesel, Michelle Rodriguez, Sung Kang, Tyrese Gibson, Jordana Brewster, Ludacris, and Nathalie Emmanuel, along with newcomer John Cena. After extensive delays, F9: The Fast Saga is finally nearing its release on July 8, 2021.
What started as a simple street racing story has grown into one of the bombastic action franchises in history, and F9 looks like it will be continuing the series’ escalation of absurdity in fun new ways. Charlize Theron’s Cipher will return as the primary antagonist, this time aided by Dom and Mia Toretto’s estranged brother Jakob (Cena). Sung Kang’s Han is also returning from the dead in a move that’s been widely celebrated by fans.
F9’s new trailer is full of familiar faces, absurd action sequences, plot twists, and of course, Coronas. The family feud between Dom and Jakob takes centerstage, and it sounds like there’s a lot of untold history between the two that should be interesting to discover. Here are the biggest reveals from the Fast and Furious 9 trailer.
The Toretto House Is Being Rebuilt
Deckard Shaw blew up the Toretto house in Furious 7, but the first shot of the F9 trailer shows that it’s being rebuilt. It’s a great way to start the trailer because the backyard barbecues Dom and Mia would host have always been the heart of the franchise, and it’s nice to see those scenes come back. Since the Toretto family’s history is at the heart of F9 with the introduction of Jakob, bringing it all back to the family home is particularly meaningful this time around. A scene where Jakob returns to the house, whether as a villain or a redeemed hero, would be really impactful. Furthermore, Brian's blue Skyline is in the same shot, which is curious since the car exploded in 2009's Fast & Furious, unless this is a different version.
The Tokyo Drift Crew Is Part Of The Fast Family
The backyard barbecue scene also reveals that the Tokyo Drift crew has officially been made part of the Fast family. Previous trailer footage revealed that Sean Boswell (Lucas Black) and Earl (Jason Tobin) would be coming back, and the new trailer shows both of them alongside Twinkie (Bow Wow) at the Toretto house, sipping on Coronas. While it’s a shame that Nathalie Kelley’s Nella isn’t back, it’s nice to see most of the Tokyo Drift crew being properly itted into the family. Though they don’t appear much in the actual action of the trailer, it seems like they’ll still have a notable role in the story.
Brian Is Still Out Of The Picture
An early shot in the F9 trailer shows Dom watching a home video of Brian playing with his son on the beach. Brian was effectively written out of the series at the end of Furious 7 after Paul Walker’s death, but the return of Mia in F9 could make that situation a little more complicated. In the end though, the fans understand why Brian is gone, and it shouldn’t be that hard to explain him out of the new movie while still paying respect to what Walker brought to the franchise.
Dom And Letty Haven’t Seen The Others For A While
The first Fast and Furious 9 trailer showed Dom, Letty, and their son Brian in what appeared to be a new home. The new trailer shows a bit more of their current living situation, revealing in a line from Roman (Gibson) that they’re pretty far-removed from the rest of the crew, at least geographically. It also seems that Dom and Letty haven’t seen the rest of the family in a while. Perhaps Dom and Letty are waiting for the old house to be fully rebuilt before moving back, or maybe Mia is the one leading the charge on the reconstruction.
F9 Has A Lot Of Magnets
A number of different bonkers action sequences are glimpsed in the F9 trailer, and most of them have something to do with…magnets? Cipher seems to be all about magnets now, using for everything from destroying cities to making cars fly. It looks like the Fast fam will get there hands on some of that advanced technology to fight back against Cipher in the end, which could create some wild and incredibly exciting chase scenes. Fast and Furious is always looking for ways to up the ante on its action, and F9 is no different.
Dom Turned His Back On His Brother
Family is at the core of the Fast and Furious franchise, and Jakob Toretto says a few things in the trailer suggesting that Dom isn’t quite as perfect in that area as previously thought. At one point, Jakob accuses Dom of turning his back on him. He also talks about how he was always in Dom’s shadow growing up, being the little brother. It’s likely that Dom and Jakob became estranged after the death of their father, especially since Dom’s subsequent assault on the man responsible landed him in jail. That time in prison may have been the final wedge between the two, though it will also be interesting to see how Mia fits into their dynamic. Whatever the details are, Dom definitely has some skeletons in his closet that he’ll have to contend with in F9.
Jakob Toretto Has His Own Cross Necklace
Dom’s cross necklace has become one of the Fast franchise’s signature symbols, and in the new F9 trailer, his brother Jakob is wearing one of his own. The implication is that the necklaces have something to do with their childhood – possibly gifts from their father – and that they could get some more thorough backstory in F9. Vin Diesel’s son will be playing a young Dom in the movie, which means there will be at least some flashback scenes to when he, Jakob and Mia were all kids. Could fans finally see Dom's father on screen?
Dom Has A Classic Fast & Furious Weapon
Dominic Toretto doesn’t mess around when you come after his family – even if you are his family. The F9 trailer includes a shot of Dom taking aim with an old-school pump-action shotgun, harkening back to his use of the weapon in the very first film. The series has gotten so ridiculous over the years that ordinary guns don’t seem all that intimidating, but it’s a cool moment for fans to get a glimpse at the old Dom.
Jakob Has A Private Army
Mia says it herself at one point in the trailer – Jakob Toretto has a private army. The Fast crew has faced off with some truly powerful foes in the past, but Jakob’s force of elite soldiers could be the most dangerous opponents yet. Accordingly, the crew seems to have no problem killing bad guys in self-defense, and a lot of random henchmen get shot, tossed out of cars, and blown up in the new trailer.
The Crew Finds Han In Tokyo
Han’s resurrection still hasn’t been explained, but the new trailer does show how he reunites with the Fast family. During an action sequence in what appears to be Tokyo, Letty and other of the crew are attacked, only to be saved by Han. If the city in the trailer is indeed Tokyo, that could mean Han has been hiding out there since his “death” in Tokyo Drift. With so many other Tokyo Drift characters also returning in Fast and Furious 9, it could be that they had something to do with his survival, intentionally or unintentionally. Either way, it should be fun to see Han reunite with Sean, Twinkie and Earl.
