Fate: The Winx Saga season 2 has a lot on its plate already after all the twists and turns of the season 1 finale, but its biggest challenge could be implementing a classic fairy character from the original Winx Club – Tecna. The old cartoon featured a vast range of different fairy magic rather than Fate’s more limited six elements, which allowed for fun, less orthodox choices like Tecna being the fairy of technology. Unfortunately for fans, that power set could be tricky to transfer into the new Winx Saga world.
The reception to Fate: The Winx Saga has been somewhat mixed since season 1 launched on Netflix. Many fans old and new have embraced the darker world of fairy magic, while others have criticized it for a variety of reasons. Fate’s changes to the core cast have been at the center of that criticism, especially the decision to replace the Latinx fairy Flora with a white character, and the casting of a British actress in the role of Musa, who in the cartoon was based on Asian-American actress Lucy Liu. These changes have sparked accusations of Fate: The Winx Saga whitewashing its cast, but they aren’t the only character differences fans are upset about. The absence of Tecna, one of Winx Club’s core fairies, has also been called out.
Hopefully, the criticisms surrounding Musa and Flora can be at least partially addressed in season 2 by bringing back the latter as a proper character and introducing more diversity to the overall cast. Tecna, however, could be trickier to include. As the fairy of technology in Winx Club, Tecna’s magical abilities don’t have a clear equivalent in Fate: The Winx Saga’s six fairy element types of water, fire, earth, air, light and mind. Tecna’s whole persona and background embodied the more sci-fi aspects of Winx Club, most of which seem to have been expunged from Fate in favor of a more grounded modern-set fantasy.
Still, there is hope for Tecna’s Winx return in season 2. With electricity confirmed as an air fairy ability, and air being the one element missing from the current core character group, Tecna could be brough in as an air fairy who uses her static powers for more technological pursuits. It wouldn’t be the first time Fate altered a past characters abilities to fit the new world. Musa, for instance, was the fairy of music in Winx Club, but Fate: The Winx Saga turned her into a mind fairy who listens to a lot of music. A similar twist could be applied to Tecna, giving her powers that are adjacent to technology and filling the rest in with her own unique personality and background.
With Alfea falling into the seemingly nefarious hands of Andreas, Rosalind and Wueen Luna at the end of Fate: The Winx Saga season 1, the fairies will need all the help they can get to battle enemies both within and without the school walls. Appearances from Flora and Tecna could certainly help them in that regard, while also presenting opportunities to diversify the cast in ways that represent all fans. Still, it will take some narrative finagling to translate Tecna into the new world of Fate: The Winx Saga.
