Caution: This post contains SPOILERS for the FBI: Most Wanted season 6 finale. The FBI: Most Wanted season 6 finale ended.
Remy Scott (Dylan McDermott) decided he would retire, and he shared with all that Barnes would be the new leader of the Fugitive Task Force. We’re left to believe that this was the conversation the two were having at the start of the episode, as Hana (Keisha Castle-Hughes) realized that Barnes knew all about the retirement announcement before it happened. However, as exciting as it is for Barnes, it doesn’t work for the arc that season 6 delivered, especially considering there is no FBI: Most Wanted season 7 happening.
Barnes Ends Up Taking Over The Fugitive Task Force In The FBI: Most Wanted Series Finale
Remy & Barnes’ Conversation Happened Off-Screen
At the beginning of the episode, Nina (Shantel VanSanten) and Ray (Edwin Hodge) told Hana that Remy and Barnes had been in Remy’s office for about 30 minutes. They had to be discussing something important, and we knew that this likely connected to the way FBI: Most Wanted season 6, episode 21 ended. As Remy learned that Barnes was considering a move to DC, he wanted to speak with Isobel (Alana De La Garza) to discuss something important.

FBI: Most Wanted Series Finale: Showrunner Reveals How Season 7 Would've Changed Remy's Ending
ScreenRant interviews FBI: Most Wanted showrunner David Hudgins about season 6 episode 22's ending and Tom Ellis' CIA spinoff series.
Barnes was excited to take over the Fugitive Task Force during the soft opening for Remy’s restaurant. In fact, everybody was excited for her to get this position, which makes sense. This is the ending that many of us expected based on how Barnes would step up as the leader of the Fugitive Task Force on FBI: Most Wanted whenever Remy was away. Remy’s conversations throughout the season also hinted that he was ready to retire, leaving the position of leader open permanently.
One thing that is clear is that Barnes didn’t take too long to decide to remain in New York to lead the team. Despite the difficult case, she had time to put together a gift for Remy’s retirement, which was his badge and ID framed. It’s just a shame that this conversation didn’t happen on-screen in the FBI spinoff finale.
Why Barnes Staying In New York Is Conflicting After Her FBI: Most Wanted Season 6 Story
Barnes Should Have Chosen Her Children In The Finale
Had the storyline of Barnes potentially moving to DC to be closer to her children not come up, I wouldn’t have had a problem with her taking over as leader of the Fugitive Task Force in FBI: Most Wanted season 6. It would have made for an excellent storyline in the future had CBS not canceled FBI: Most Wanted, and it was a promotion I have waited three seasons to see, since Jess LaCroix’s (Julian McMahon) death.

Barnes Taking Over The Fugitive Task Force Is FBI: Most Wanted's Best Ending, But I Have 1 Big Problem With It
Barnes taking over as leader of the Fugitive Task Force would be excellent to end FBI: Most Wanted, but there is a major issue that comes with that.
However, in FBI: Most Wanted season 6, episode 19, Barnes shared with Hana that she was considering a promotion in DC, and Hana was certain that Barnes would take it. As Barnes said, she struggled to be a good mom and a good agent. She didn’t want to leave the team, but she needed to figure out what was going to be best for her as a mom, because she missed her children. In fact, in FBI: Most Wanted season 6, episode 21, Barnes got the call that the job was hers if she wanted it, and she was excited about that.
Barnes' ex-wife Charlotte took the children to DC after their divorce, meaning that Barnes would travel to DC and back to New York regularly to see them, and that started to take its toll.
So, with that, it doesn’t make sense that she would then decide to stay in New York. She was ready to be closer to her children, and moms often have to make sacrifices in their careers for their children. In fact, all parents do, and it didn’t seem like much of a sacrifice considering how excited Barnes felt about the new job. I would have been less conflicted had I seen the conversation between Remy and Barnes in the FBI: Most Wanted season 6 finale, but I do feel like it was the wrong choice for a series finale.
