Morgan would appear in Fear the Walking Dead.

The exact nature of Morgan's storyline on Fear TWD remains unclear, as the character is still alive and well in TWD. But on Talking Dead, after the crossover announcement, TWD showrunner Scott M. Gimple said, "Even though Morgan is going to be featured on Fear, he has a lot of story left on The Walking Dead." The video of James on set, though, raises a few questions.

In Fear TWD's video [above], James says, "I am moving from The Walking Dead to Fear the Walking Dead as of today." His phrasing — moving from one show to another — suggests the possibility that he'll take a hiatus from TWD while he works on Fear TWD. And toward the end of the video, he makes another statement that carries a sense of finality: "I have had the most amazing time on The Walking Dead, as I said last night, but I am really, really, really looking forward to my time now on Fear the Walking Dead."

In of narrative, however, there's little keeping Morgan from appearing in both TWD and Fear TWD. Because the spinoff is a prequel to the original show, Morgan's presence in Fear TWD could give viewers a sense of what he was up to during his absence from TWD, throughout the period of time separating his introduction to and reunion with Rick.

A frontrunner to make the jump from Cudlitz's expressed interest in returning to the character, made him a likely crossover candidate — but it wasn't meant to be.

But Morgan is hardly a disappointing choice: Over the course of TWD, he has been a consistently compelling character. The gradual unwrapping of his worldview, as well as the slow burn of his growing cynicism, has lent the show much of its ethical edge. If handled well, Morgan's inclusion in Fear TWD could both make for captivating TV and strengthen the bond between the two shows. TWD and Fear TWD don't necessarily need to lean too heavily into crossover territory, but so long as it enriches the narrative (and puts a bit of a flame beneath TWD's occasionally slug-like pace), a crossover sounds just fine.
