One of the most interesting DC Comics properties is Elseworlds. Dating back to 1989, the title always served as an imprint DC used to tackle stories that exist outside the main DC continuity. As expansive a range of stories creators are able to tell within DC's ongoing canon, there are still some natural limits – but with Elseworlds, the possibilities remain limitless.

Just announced at New York Comic Con, DC's hit series DC vs. Vampires is getting a sequel, as the publisher relaunches its Elseworlds line with some big-hitting alternate reality stories. DC vs. Vampires: World War V will see the remaining heroes take on the regime of corrupted vampire queen Barbara Gordon aka Batgirl.

James Gunn confirms that Elseworlds movies are in development that are outside the DC Universe. DC Studios is replacing the DC Films division as Gunn and Peter Safran are taking charge of the DCU with TV, film, and animation. The two CEOs had their roles go into effect on November 1, and there have been an endless amount of reports about what they are doing with the DCU. While Gunn has debunked various rumors, some reports have turned out to be true, as Wonder Woman 3 is no longer moving forward, and Henry Cavill is done as Superman in the DCU, with Gunn penning a new reboot for the hero. But there are still many things that have yet to be clarified, as DC Studios have been popping into the headlines over the last few weeks.Gunn has been responding on Twitter to various fans and has shared a few teases about what DC Studios are doing with the DCU. One fan recently asked Gunn if he is "producing any Elseworlds DC projects that aren't set in the DCU?" under his DC Studios era. It didn't take long for Gunn to reply back with a positive answer. DC Comics’ next version of Supergirl should utilize one of Superman’s forgotten daughters from the Elseworlds story, Superman: Secret Identity. The reimagined origin story introduces another version of Clark Kent who becomes a father to two girls and inherit his powers.

Elseworlds' stories often give iconic DC characters strange new appearances and in Batman: Bloodstorm, Catwoman undergoes an exceptionally strange one. She no longer simply takes inspiration from her love of cats—she becomes one.

The Joker and Batman are continuously pit against one another in DC Comics, with Gotham's vigilante failing to permanently end his opponent thanks to his debatable no-kill rule. However, he HAS killed the Clown Prince of Crime in a few Elseworlds comics. Nonetheless, there are a few things in comics that just don't allow for this kind of occurrence to truly happen within canon, while Elseworlds can do it whenever desired.

When it comes to relationships, Superman has had a few and, in one Elseworlds storyline, he gets to live with two lovers. He's most frequently paired with Lois Lane, though he is also frequently depicted as having feelings for his childhood friend, Lana Lang. Superman/Wonder Woman: Whom Gods Destroy provides the hero with a new opportunity. In this story, he has the ability to not have to choose which of the two women he wants to be with the most.
