There is a beloved Final Fantasy 9 character hidden in 10 Biggest Final Fantasy 16 Spoilers
FF9’s Vivi Is An Easter Egg In Final Fantasy 16
As was spotted by the Maku on Twitter, there seems to be a Final Fantasy 9 character hidden in Final Fantasy 16. This is a scarecrow present in many plantations that wears a blue gown and a big yellow hat. Although with a vastly different style, their main designs are similar to those of Vivi, the small black mage that plays an important role in Final Fantasy 9. Another Vivi scarecrow was noticed by Mighty_Prospero on Reddit, who posted a picture of Clive standing next to it with the caption saying “Poor Vivi.”
Final Fantasy 16’s Scarecrow Could Be A Broader FF Reference
Although Vivi seems to be the Final Fantasy 9 character hidden in Final Fantasy 16, the scarecrow in the new game may not actually be an Easter egg solely referencing FF9’s deuteragonist. Vivi’s design itself is based on the design of classic black mages in the franchise, as the game was a return to roots at the time. This means that the scarecrow that players encounter throughout Valisthea may not actually be a reference to Vivi himself but to the black mages in the series.
Maku even mentions that it could be a regular black mage in the series rather than the iconic Final Fantasy 9 character hidden in Final Fantasy 16. Nevertheless, Vivi has a wide fanbase, and he is much more appreciated than nameless black mages throughout the series, which explains why he is being called out as the scarecrow. Square Enix has yet to confirm if the Easter Egg is a reference to Vivi or black mages in general, but it does seem like Final Fantasy 16 players are keen on nicknaming it Vivi.
