Summary

  • FF7 Rebirth has 14 chapters, breaking up into generally longer segments than FF7 Remake did.
  • Certain chapters may vary in length due to dense side content in larger regions or minigames.
  • The chapters offer flexibility for replayability, with a Chapter Selection menu for revisiting specific portions.

Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth isn't a short game by any means, and the use of chapters to divide its narrative helps to maintain a consistent structure of progress across its lengthy runtime. The chapter format first appeared in Final Fantasy 7 Remake, which portions the Midgar section of the original FF7 story into 18 parts. Although not every chapter is of equal length, knowing how many there are does help provide a basic estimate of how momentum throughout the game is going.

Although FF7 Remake can still take longer to beat than the entirety of the original FF7, it pales in comparison to FF7 Rebirth. Leaving Midgar behind for the larger world of Gaia opens up a much more extensive space to explore, and the midsection of the story takes up a greater chunk of the main plot. Runtime doesn't translate directly to the number of chapters, however, and the difference between the two is actually somewhat surprising.

FF7 Rebirth Has 14 Total Chapters

Every Chapter Is Not Of Equal Length

In total, FF7 Rebirth features 14 unique chapters, dividing the game into longer segments than its predecessor. At first glance, it might seem odd that Square Enix didn't stick with the same number or pile more on top, but it makes sense with the actual structure of the game. The narrative of FF7 Rebirth is highly dependent on bouncing from location to location as the party chases down threads and faces foes, and the chapters tend to correspond with these shifts more so than they do with time played.

Because of this approach, it's possible for some chapters in FF7 Rebirth to take a lot longer than others. Side content is a big part of the game, and it's more densely packed in some areas than others. While more linear story segments in smaller locations only offer so much room to get distracted, segments of FF7 Rebirth that take place in large regions or offer up a lot of minigames can vary wildly in runtime depending on an individual player's approach.

Every Gold Saucer Minigame in FF7 Rebirth, Ranked Least To Most Fun

Many of FF7 Rebirth’s best minigames can be found at the Gold Saucer, a paradise of delight and debauchery worth visiting time and time again.

A good example of this concept can be found in Chapters 5 and 6 of the game, which represent a fairly focused section that goes straight into an extremely open-ended one. In Chapter 5, a boat setting heavily restricts the party's movement, and taking the time to fully master a card game tournament is the only significant way to slow things down. When the party makes landfall in Chapter 6, a city full of minigames and side quests awaits, as does the surrounding area with its own challenges to pursue.

Anyone looking to avoid even vague hints about where FF7 Rebirth goes over the course of its runtime should probably avoid checking out the full chapter list, as some of the titles give suggestions as to their contents. None are direct spoilers, however, and taking a look can be especially useful for fans of the original game trying to see what goes where. The full list of FF7 Rebirth chapters is as follows:

  • Chapter 1: Fall of a Hero
  • Chapter 2: A New Journey Begins
  • Chapter 3: Deeper Into Darkness
  • Chapter 4: Junon - Dawn of a New Era
  • Chapter 5: Blood in the Water
  • Chatper 6: Fool's Paradise
  • Chapter 7: Those Left Behind
  • Chapter 8: All That Glitters
  • Chapter 9: The Planet Stirs
  • Chapter 10: Watcher of the Vale
  • Chapter 11: The Long Shadow of Shinra
  • Chapter 12: A Golden Key
  • Chapter 13: Where Angels Fear to Tread
  • Chapter 14: End of the World

After finishing FF7 Rebirth, chapters serve the purpose of allowing flexible replayability, with a Chapter Selection menu making it possible to revisit specific portions without committing to a complete playthrough. One run of the campaign might be more than enough for a while, considering its length, but the addition of a hard mode does provide an extra dose of appeal. Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth's 14 chapters break up a substantial game experience, even if some of them can be impressive in scale on their own.

Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth is the sequel to Final Fantasy 7 Remake and will see Cloud and his friends set off beyond the walls of Midgar to explore the world, stop Sephiroth's machinations, and see the world outside their slum prison. Now that the whispers of fate no longer guide the characters along the pre-destined path set in the original PlayStation classic Final Fantasy 7, the heroes (and villains) will shape the future. The game will still visit prominent locales and revisit crucial story points, but it will be a more significant departure from the first game from the source material.
