Final Fantasy Tactics: The Ivalice Chronices Releases Later This Year For PS4 & PS5

Release Date: September 30, 2025

Final Fantasy Tactics: The Ivalice Chronicles brings the classic tactical RPG to modern platforms with two separate versions of the game. The Enhanced version, according to PlayStation Blog, has "fully voiced dialogue, an optimized and updated UI, graphical improvements, and a number of other quality of life features, including the more accessible “Squire” difficulty setting" designed for newcomers to the tactics genre. The updated UI in particular will help modernize the game, with more information presented and a turn order added to one edge of the screen.

The Classic version is nearly a straight port of the original game, but includes the translation created for its previous The War of the Lions re-release on the PlayStation Portable in 2007. This translation is widely considered far superior to the original, which was heavily criticized upon FF Tactics' original release a decade prior. The Classic version s high resolutions and wide-screen, and has the convenience of autosave, but is more or less the original experience.

Our Take: The Ivalice Chronicles Will Hopefully Lead To New FF Tactics Games

A Blind Spot For The Famed Series

Final Fantasy Tactics Ivalice Chronicles title card.

Final Fantasy Tactics: The Ivalice Chronicles is a great comeback for the series, and the improvements in the Enhanced version look great, but it's still odd that Square Enix hasn't continued the series with a proper new entry. We ed tactical RPG Triangle Strategy would fit – it feels like we're long overdue for Final Fantasy to re-enter the tactical arena.

The Ivalice Chronicles is an unsurprising step from Square Enix, though. Many classic Final Fantasy games have been revamped in the Pixel Remaster series, and Final Fantasy 7 is so far the only one to make a huge comeback with the Remake trilogy. The Ivalice Chronicles may not satiate those hoping for a brand-new Final Fantasy Tactics game, but here's hoping it's just the beginning of the series' comeback.
