There have been many games released surrounding the initial story of events of Final Fantasy 7. To see the game ported to a console like the Nintendo Switch, like many of Square Enix's titles recently have been, could be a fun bit of nostalgia for fans currently waiting for the next part of Final Fantasy 7 Remake.

FF7: Crisis Core was originally released for the PSP console. The small handheld system by Sony was hit and miss as a console, with its short battery life and lack of game selection, but Crisis Core made the system worth the purchase for those who wanted to play the prequel. Crisis Core sported excellent graphics and detailed cutscenes reminiscent of FF7 Advent Children, and even in 2020 the game still looks very nice. However, FF7: Crisis Core was only ever playable on the PSP, which has long since become an obsolete system, leaving the game in the ashes of FF7's history.

A remaster of Crisis Core for the Nintendo Switch would not only make this game available to players who would love to replay it, but would give those playing Final Fantasy 7 Remake a chance to go back and learn Zack's story and the origins of Sephiroth as a villain for the series. This would be an especially interesting remaster for those who have only just gotten into FF7's story, and missed the opportunity to play the game back in the 2000's. It would also give FF7 Remake players more perspective on the world, and would bring emotional depth to characters like Cloud, Sephiroth, and Aerith, whose origin stories are all included in Crisis Core.

Final Fantasy 7: Crisis Core Should Come To The Switch

 Geostigma reference on Cloud's arm

While it would be amazing to see Crisis Core ported to the Switch, it doesn't seem likely it will happen. While many older titles have been brought to the Nintendo Store for players to enjoy on an updated console, there has been no news from Square Enix or Nintendo about plans to reintegrate the game into modern player libraries. It is even less likely FF7: Crisis Core would be ported to the PlayStation, as it was originally for a handheld system. Being able to play the game would make the references to Crisis Core in FF7 Remake more meaningful for those who haven't had the chance to play the older game, and not having access to Crisis Core is frustrating.

While the rumor mill has been churning out speculations on remasters for Crisis Core, Before Crisis, and Dirge of Cerberus for years, it looks like, for the time being, players will have to settle for the original Final Fantasy 7 game on the Switch. It is possible more content from the prequel games could be laced into the story of , like Vincent's importance, in part two, but it likely won't be as in-depth as the full games being referenced. Releasing a remaster for a prequel like Crisis Core could give gamers something to tide them over until the next part of FF7 Remake is announced, and allow them to go on the emotional roller coaster of events leading up to Final Fantasy 7.
