A new Square Enix launching a website for the milestone, fans are more hopeful that a remake will be officially announced this year, and it's hard to deny the evidence of the almost-imminent reveal.
On X, Square Enix posted a screenshot of Vivi's monologue during the ending of Final Fantasy 9, "My memories will be a part of the sky..." and captioned the post with, "If you know, you know" and a crying emoji, referencing the bittersweet ending of the original game. Needless to say, fans are now more hopeful that a remake reveal is coming soon, but others are equally skeptical. gremplin on X replied to the post and said, "Don't toy with us like this please."
What We Know About FF9 So Far
There Are A Lot Of Rumors And Leaks About A Remake
The rumors of a Final Fantasy 9 remake started back in 2021 with the Nvidia Geoforce Now leak, which listed several games that have now been officially confirmed and other games that have not been announced quite yet. OnkelJupp on Reddit compiled a list back then and last updated it in August 2024 with games that have been confirmed from the leak and ones that are still to be announced.

I Love Final Fantasy 9, Which Is Exactly Why I Don't Want an FF9 Remake
There's no doubt that Final Fantasy 9 is a masterpiece. It's a perfect FF game and one of the best RPGs out. And that's why we don't need a remake.
Following that, another major leak came from EpicDB, which is essentially a database for the Epic Game Store, also listing the FF9 remake as a title with some DLC as well, one being a "Tetra Master Card Starter Pack," in reference to the game's iconic card mini-game. A "Thief's Knife Bonus" was also found, possibly indicating a weapon for lead character Zidane as a pre-order bonus. Leaker Nate The Hate on X, who has a pretty decent track record of leaks, is also saying the game is in development and that it is most likely a 2026 game.
Our Take: The Evidence Is Stacking Up For FF9
But Will It Be Revealed This Year?
With director Naoki Yoshida mentioned there was a secret reason behind all the recent FF9 love.
With all the evidence, it's less of a question of whether the FF9 remake exists and more of a question of when it will be revealed and when it is coming out. There was speculation that it would be seen during the Switch 2 reveal, but that didn't happen. Summer Game Fest is happening on June 6, and PlayStation and Square Enix have dropped major announcements there in the past. As the event is right before the official anniversary date of FF9, Summer Game Fest seems like the best place to announce a remake of Final Fantasy 9.
