The events of Endwalker force FFXIV players to ask themselves the hard questions as they’re posed to the Warrior of Light. Up until this point in the story, the game’s villains have been individuals or groups with physical forms. In Endwalker, however, the Warrior of Light is essentially up against the emotion of despair, a much harder foe to defeat.

Fans who’ve paid attention to lyrics in FFXIV’s music have pointed out lines that clearly articulate what the story is getting at. Some of these impactful songs are featured in the FFXIV: Endwalker launch trailer. The song “Answers,” which has been part of FFXIV since the beginning, poses the question: “Tell us why, given life, we are meant to die, helpless in our cries?” While some of the music captures the feeling of hopeless desperation, lyrics like those in “Footfalls” encourage fans to forge ahead despite the fear and pain they go through, both in the story and in real life.

The song “Flow” is one of Endwalker's best, playing at many key emotional moments throughout the MSQ. It reinforces the game’s emphasis on forging ahead with lyrics that read: “Though you will weep, the winds rise again, for this journey’s end / Is but one step forward to tomorrow.” This is just one inspiring line out of many that can be found throughout the whole soundtrack. Endwalker’s music is part of what makes it FFXIV’s best expansion yet, and fans of the story who haven’t listened closely to song lyrics should do so if they want to enhance the emotional impact of the story.

In a surprisingly moving speech in FFXIV: Endwalker's MSQ, Urianger gives to a clan of bunnies on the moon, he recounts a time he once asked Moenbryda what it means to live. After thinking about it for a while, she had told him, “The anticipation of a half-read story's conclusion. The hope today's mistake may serve as tomorrow's lesson. The wish that a new acquaintance may one day call thee friend.” Urianger then tells the Loporrits he is still searching for his own answer and offers to assist them on a journey of self-discovery and enlightenment - an offer that carries a sense of self-awareness, as this is exactly what Endwalker does for players.

FFXIV: Endwalker's ending explains to fans that “to live is to suffer,” but it points out that there could never be joy without suffering, and that’s what makes it worth enduring. There’s no single answer to the question of what gives life meaning; rather, every individual must discover the answer for themselves. Just as the Warrior of Light does, so too can fans find happiness by heeding Final Fantasy XIV: Endwalker’s message.
