There are a but it is a strange system. Weirdly, the easiest way to successfully fish may be to listen to the sounds the fish makes as it is hooked, rather than go by sight.

Fishing up the Arapaima in Animal Crossing: New Horizons

Animal Crossing New Horizons Arapaima Shadow in the water

The arapaima is one of the fish that can be caught, and there is a big reward for doing so. Selling it to either of the Nooks in Nook’s Cranny nets 10,000, or it can be sold to C.J. who sporadically visits for 15,000. The arapaima is one of the more valuable fish in the game and as such, is rarely encountered. Fortunately, it is noticeable when it does show up. It can be found in rivers, and players should look for the largest shadow they can find. If they manage to spot one, it might be the arapaima. After all, in real life it is the largest freshwater fish in the world, living in the Amazon River in South America. The fish appears between the months of June-September for players in the northern hemisphere, and December-March in the southern hemisphere. It also only shows up between the hours of 4PM-9AM.

Again, getting the arapaima to actually spawn is the greatest challenge. The easiest way to catch it might be to visit an uninhabited island using a Nook Miles Ticket. Those are smaller islands, which means it is easier to find fish in the river. As only so many fish will show up at once, players can catch or scare away the fish they don’t want until the largest shadow appears. Or they can use bait until it shows up. Once the fish has been caught, the Joy-Con controllers will vibrate fiercely before the villager yanks the fish out of the water . . . somehow. How does the line not snap, and where does the fish go when the villager puts it away? Don’t try to make sense of video game logic.
