Warning: SPOILERS for Fire Island ahead.
Hulu's latest original movie Jane Austen's novel Pride & Prejudice, Fire Island is a romantic comedy that sees Noah trying to get his friend Howie to hook up with someone. In doing so, their group of friends encounters a group that looks down upon Noah, Howie, and their friends for simply being themselves.
Despite this, the group stays true to who they are and both Noah and Howie find a little bit of romance on their weeklong vacation. Howie ends up with James Scully's Charlie, a doctor with a heart of gold who is consistently led astray by his friends. Meanwhile, Noah finds himself equally enthralled and infuriated by Conrad Ricamora's Will, a stoic and stodgy guy who just needs to loosen up a bit. By the end, both pairs end up together via non-traditional means. Still, during their week on New York's Fire Island, they face some challenges, including the daunting prospect that this could be their last year coming to the island.
While the movie ties up its central romances, there are also enough dangling threads left for a potential Fire Island 2. Considering the resurgence of rom-coms in recent years, it wouldn't be at all surprising to see it get the green light. Here's what we know so far about a potential sequel in Fire Island 2.
Will Fire Island 2 Happen?
It's certainly possible that Fire Island 2 could happen. Originally imagined as an original series for Quibi, the ill-fated streaming service, Fire Island was eventually acquired by Disney's Searchlight Pictures. Since it was originally conceived as a streaming series, it's possible that star and scribe Joel Kim Booster had multiple seasons of the show planned. Fitting all of that into one minute movie would prove difficult, so if there's more material lying around, it's possible that some sort of sequel idea is waiting in the wings for a greenlight.
Of course, whether or not Fire Island 2 happens will be contingent on the movie's success on Hulu. Early signs indicate that it could be a sleeper hit for a few reasons. Releasing the movie during Pride Month is a smart strategy, especially considering the lack of mainstream LGBTQ+ movies that don't end in some sort of tragedy, falling into the toxic "Bury Your Gays" trope. Additionally, Fire Island reviews have praised the movie as a heartfelt and hilarious take on Pride & Prejudice. Lastly, Fire Island's ending certainly sets up multiple storylines that could be explored in a sequel.
What Fire Island 2's Story Could Be About
The ending of Fire Island sets up several plotlines that could be explored in Fire Island 2. With Howie and Charlie ending up together at the end, a sequel could follow their relationship post-vacation and explore how they get to know each other in the real world. Additionally, with Will and Noah also beginning some sort of romance, Fire Island 2 could look beyond traditional modes of monogamy to explore the different types of relationships outside of heteronormative and monogamous structures. The romantic tension between Ricamora and Booster drives much of Fire Island, so that could be a fruitful dynamic to explore in a follow-up movie.
Another Fire Island 2 plot point could be how the cast of the first Fire Island movie comes together again. Margaret Cho's character Erin provides the house for this group of friends every summer, but at the beginning of the 2022 movie, she reveals that her parents are planning to sell the house. Fire Island 2 could explore how the group comes together again despite not having a place to stay. This would not only allow for more shenanigans at the titular vacation spot but could also spotlight the various characters in the first movie who deserved more screentime.
