While Skybound Entertainment's first-ever kung-fu series Fire Power might be riding off into the sunset, its creators are not about to let it go gently into that good comic-book night without releasing a round of gorgeous new art.
As per Skybound Entertainment series Fire Power will conclude its publication run with its 30th issue, which is scheduled to be published on December 27th, 2023. The series made headlines even before its debut because of its creative team: The Walking Dead and Invincible creator Robert Kirkman and Eisner Award-winner Chis Samnee. Skybound's post includes beautiful new cover art from Samnee — as well as a variant cover by Cliff Chiang.
While comic endings are a fundamental element of the industry, what sets Fire Power's conclusion apart is the creator's extra-special effort to make the final issue stand out as an exceptional homage to the series. Rather than just let the series quietly slide into retirement, its creators are sending it off right with eye-popping artwork in an extended 56-page concluding issue.
Owen Johnson and the Long Arm of Shaolin Kung-Fu
Fire Power's story follows the joys and sorrows of Owen Johnson, who, about two decades before the beginning of the story, was in China studying the ancient Shaolin Temple art of "Fire Power." Through training and practice, Johnson eventually becomes the first practitioner in years to reach such an advanced level that he can produce a fireball. However, once he obtains the fireball ability, trouble rears its face. Forced to flee back to the United States, Johnson now only wants to be the best husband and father he can be for his children. Unfortunately, whatever forced him to leave China has followed him to the United States. Now, he's in the fight of his life as he tries to keep his family safe — while also fulfilling his duties as a Fire Power wielder.
The series initially began with a graphic novel that set the context of the story. This was followed by the ongoing series that focuses on Johnson's life after he leaves the Shaolin Temple and returns to the States. Like Kirkman's other works, Fire Power has been popular with both fans and critics, despite not being as aggressively marketed as The Walking Dead or Invincible. However, like those series, Kirkman always had an ending in mind for the story. Now, that ending is being celebrated with truly gorgeous cover art from industry stalwarts Samnee and Chiang.
Skybound Entertainment Is Just Getting Started
Fresh off his success with The Walking Dead, Kirkman founded Skybound in 2010 hoping to give comic creators a solid platform upon which to launch and grow their careers — especially as all Skybound creators retain the rights to their intellectual property and content. Despite Fire Power's conclusion, Skybound has a number of other projects still on the stands. But fans will certainly miss Kirkman and Samnee's family-oriented kung-fu series when it concludes this December.
