There are many Greatsword skills in The First Berserker: Khazan to choose from, each with its unique use case. However, certain Greatsword skills are simply way better than others and should be in everyone's arsenal. While some of the best Greatsword skills are part of the basic Greatsword skill tree, other more powerful Greatsword skills require specific items to be equipped.
If you're working on a Greatsword build in The First Berserker: Khazan for your next playthrough, you'll want to figure out exactly what sort of Greatsword playstyle you want to dive into. Some of these skills are more defensive by nature, while others require aggressive tactics and skilled combo chaining. The best Greatsword skills are gained by equipping specific Greatswords and Greatsword-based gear sets.
10 Counterstrike
A Universally Useful Skill For All Occasions
Counterstrike is an amazing skill in The First Berserker: Khazan that can be picked up from the basic Greatsword skill tree. You can use this skill as a replacement for a guard, pushing enemies back, or if it's a successful Brink Guard, it will deliver an automatic potent blow and restore the spirit consumed. It can also be charged, and you can use it while taking damage, though it'll be slightly less effective.

Should You Play Easy Mode In The First Berserker: Khazan?
Easy mode in The First Berserker: Khazan reduces difficulty, but bosses are still a challenge and you'll be locked out of the true ending.
Counterstrike can be buffed even further as you advance Mastery level, with both Chance and Slam available at level 26, adding different effects to the skill, though only one can be active at a time. Personally, I think Slam is the superior choice in most cases, though ideally you would take both and then activate the Level 34 Shift upgrade. This lets you use Counterstrike during Swift Attacks and Potent Blows.
9 Giant Hunt
Ideal For Large Enemies
The Giant Hunt skill is a top-tier Greatsword option, as it deals increased damage to larger enemies. Giant Hunt lets Khazan leap into the air and plunge the Greatsword down into the enemy's head, especially useful for larger enemies such as The First Berserker: Khazan's infamous Volbaino. Giant Hunt is an overall boss killer skill and doesn't require any special equipment.
The Hunter Set is also ideal for the Hismar fight, as it significantly damages Dragonkin.
Further, you can upgrade this to deal even more damage for an additional Spirit charge, and Khazan will perform some spectacular acrobatics, "dealing additional strikes, charging forward and leaping up off the enemy." You'll want to utilize the Leap upgrade in the endgame, especially as Hismar the dragon boss takes considerable damage from a well-timed Giant Hunt attack.
8 Mad Dash
A Devourer Of Darkness Specialty
You'll need the Devourer of Darkness Greatsword equipped for this skill, but it's absolutely worth it. Fully charged, you'll do two spinning strikes and a follow-up spin and jump attack, each dealing massive damage and staggering enemies. This is unlocked with only the DoD sword equipped, which is incredible because you can mix and match freely with some of the other great armor sets in The First Berserker: Khazan.

Mad Dash |
|
Mad Dash is only one of the perks of the Devourer of Darkness gear set. Should you choose to equip the full set, you'll actually get a poison buff to your Brutal Attacks and increased Poison damage against enemies. You'll also gain access to the next best skill on this list, Ghost Arm Block: Overpower.
7 Ghost Arm Block: Overpower
Ghost Arm Block Is Essential & OP, Literally
Ghost Arm Block is one of the most essential and powerful Greatsword skills, as it empowers Khazan to block while charging up a potent blow. There are many buffs to this skill, but arguably the best upgrade for Ghost Arm comes from the Devourer of Darkness set mentioned above. This full set gives you Overpower, which immediately charges follow-up attacks after a Ghost Arm Block, and if you use a Fury attack, it doesn't cost a Fury charge.

The First Berserker: Khazan - The Best Dual Wield Build (Armor Sets, Weapons, Stats, & Skills)
The best Dual Wield build in The First Berserker: Khazan incorporates items from the Unending Tragedy Set and invests in Strength and Willpower.
The practical result of this combo is devastating. You can easily sustain multiple charged attacks if you time things correctly without spending any Fury charges, and chain a combo with Fury attacks to deal massive damage.
6 Phantom Judgement
A Soul-Eating Skill For All Weapons
Phantom Judgement is an all-around great skill, as there is a version of it for all three weapon types in Khazan. To unlock it for any weapon, you'll need to have the entire Soul Eater gear equipped with your chosen weapon. In this case, we're obviously going with the Soul-Cleaving Greatsword, but both the Soul Eater Spear and Dual Wield have a skill with the same effect.
You can pick up the Soul Eater Scroll during the "Lacrima" mission in the Aldevir Central District.
Phantom Judgement allows you to reset an enemy's exhaustion duration, allowing you to inflict massive damage while bosses sit there completely incapacitated. For the Greatsword, Phantom Judgement falls under the Swift Attack skills, and I'd highly recommend it for mid-game bosses you find yourself struggling with.
5 Volcanic Wrath
A Unique Chaos-Ridden Skill
One of my favorite Greatsword sets in the game is the Chaos-Ridden set, primarily because you have access to the Volcanic Wrath skill when it's fully equipped. Volcanic Wrath uses one Fury charge to unleash a burst of up to five attacks that deal significant damage, and you can repeat this to chain consecutive attacks together with additional Fury charges.

If you go for a potent blow or don't have enough charges to continue the attack, you'll deal a finishing blow. This move will likely drain enemy stamina and health like you've never seen before. The Chaos-Ridden Set has additional Greatsword benefits as well, including excellent buffs that will take your Brink Guard abilities to the next level. To craft the Chaos-Ridden Set at the blacksmith in The First Berserker: Khazan, you'll need the Chaos-Ridden Scroll. This can be picked up during the "Final Conquest" mission in the Abandoned Citadel.
4 Titanic Descent: Eruption
A Neglected Greatsword Unique Banger
You'll be able to unlock Titanic Descent in the regular Greatsword skill tree once you reach Mastery Level 18. This straightforward dash-and-slash attack can be the bread and butter of any aggressive Greatsword build, but it can be enhanced considerably if you equip the Neglected Greatsword. The Neglected Greatsword is part of the Ashen Wolf set, which you need to reach nine Netherworld Energy charges as well, if that's something you're interested in.

The First Berserker: Khazan - All Charnak Mountain Range Soulstone Locations
There are 20 soulstones in the first major region of The First Berserker: Khazan, the Charnak Mountain Range. Break them all for some nice buffs.
The Eruption Titanic Descent inflicts an AoE on the ground underneath where you landed the Titanic Descent blow, which deals multiple hits to the enemy. At the cost of a single spirit charge, this skill makes the Neglected Greatsword worth having in the back pocket.
3 Furious Swipe: Agility
A Merciful & Deadly Greatsword Skill
Furious Swipe should be on your Greatsword skill list regardless, but when you have a high-quality Greatsword of Mercy equipped, you'll have access to the Agility upgrade. At its basic level, Furious Swipe is an attack that dodges in a specified direction, delivering a powerful spinning slash. You'll be temporarily invincible, and performing a Brink Dodge restores the spirit consumed.

Furious Swipe: Agility |
|
This ability is upgraded initially at Mastery Level 18 with the Pursuit skill, which allows you to chain Furious Swipe into a dodge attack. However, with the Greatsword of Mercy, you can charge attacks instantly after performing Furious Swipe, and chaining spirit skills doesn't require an additional spirit charge. You can get the Greatsword of Mercy as a random drop from many enemies in the game, and it's part of the simple three-piece Bishop set.
2 Scorching Earth
A Fugitive Mage Destroyer Skill
Scorching Earth is a unique skill that requires the Fugitive Mage's Greatsword. The skill delivers a powerful slash after triggering a huge explosion. You can chain into a Mortal Blow attack by following up Scorching Earth with a Potent Blow. The attack creates an AoE on the ground beneath you while also having a huge swing radius. The Fugitive Mage's Greatsword is part of the Fugitive Mage set, which you can farm from Bellerian, one of the tougher late-game bosses.
Don't forget to purchase special crafting materials from Danjin the Jar Enthusiast - he'll sell three of each kind for a sum of Lacrima.
Scorching Earth is just one perk of the Fugitive Mage set, which enhances Heart Piercer skills and Armor Breaker skills. You can get the Fugitive Mage's Scroll during the "Atlante the Precise" mission in Wastus Canyon, and you'll need to farm the Hermit's Enchanted Stone to craft the entire set. Scorching Earth only requires the Greatsword of Mercy, however, which can be paired with a range of different armor sets.
1 Mortal Blow & Inner Fury
Because I Couldn't Choose Just One
I couldn't decide between Mortal Blow and Inner Fury as the best Greatsword skills in Khazan, as both of them are equally OP when upgraded, but for different reasons. Mortal Blow with the Murderous upgrade enabled is hands down the most effective all-purpose damage dealer when included in a combo with a Savage Momentum attack. Murderous requires the Sentinel's Greatsword, which is part of the Crimson Fiend set and can drop randomly from various enemies.

The First Berserker Khazan Has One Unique Feature Every Soulslike Is Missing
The First Berserker: Khazan has a unique feature that lets you earn XP and Skill Points for fighting bosses, even if you end up dying in the process.
Inner Fury, on the other hand, is arguably one of the most effective AoE skills for the Greatsword. When enhanced with the Swift upgrade, it's useful in nearly every single situation you find yourself in. The blast from below pummels surrounding enemies and increases charging speed for 15 seconds. The skill can also be charged to increase its damage and is available in its basic form at level 18, making this one of the most powerful Greatsword skills available early in the game.
Overall, you can't really go wrong when it comes to Greatsword skills. Whether you play defensively and utilize Ghost Arm Block more often than other skills, or play extremely aggressively and choose to chain combos as much as possible, there's a Greatsword skill for every occasion in The First Berserker: Khazan.
