Five Nights at Freddy's has broken a major record for Blumhouse, giving the horror movie a key place in the production company's history. Based on Scott Cawthon's video game series of the same name, the film follows security guard Mike Schmidt as he encounters haunted animatronics during his new job at Freddy Fazbear's Pizza. The movie came out both in theaters and on Peacock on October 27, 2023.
Now, Five Nights at Freddy's box office now makes it the highest-grossing Blumehouse film of all time.
The founder of the studio confirmed the game adaptation has sured the worldwide gross of 2016's Split, the previous record-holder. He went on to thank Universal, Peacock, and the film's cast and crew for making the movie such a massive success.
Why Five Nights At Freddy's Is A Huge Horror Success
As of writing, Five Nights at Freddy's has earned $295.5 million globally, reflecting how popular the gaming franchise has been since its first installment in 2014. Beyond a series of games, though, the franchise has also been releasing books at regular intervals since 2015. Due to how large the series is coupled with its vast online popularity, it's no surprise the movie was able to draw viewers into theaters.
Given the longevity of the horror series, it's unsurprising to see the film climb the ranks of Blumhouse horror movies as their most successful. It underscores how, despite generally negative reviews for Five Nights at Freddy's, the movie maintained the spirit of the game series while telling its own story. By appealing to viewers familiar with the franchise's lore and characters, the movie was able to persuade them to see it in theaters over Peacock's same-day release.
The success of the film makes it clear a Five Nights at Freddy's sequel will no doubt come to fruition in the future. Given how many games there are in the series, a second film could pull from any number of them in order to continue the story. Now that the film is Blumhouse's highest-grossing production, there may be official news about a sequel arriving soon.
Matthew Lillard, who portrays William Afton in Five Night at Freddy's, said in January 2023 that he signed on for three movies in the franchise.
