Five Nights at Freddy’s is an intense horror movie adapted from the video game series of the same name, and its cast is filled with recognizable faces that bring these iconic characters to life for a new generation. The Five Nights at Freddy’s movie follows a mostly original narrative with plenty of unexpected twists and turns that even existing fans of the game won’t expect, though it is inspired heavily by the heaps of background lore in the Five Nights at Freddy’s universe.
The first video game in the Five Nights at Freddy’s franchise was released in 2014, and it quickly became a huge online sensation, with players ranking it among the scariest video games ever released. The game follows a troubled security guard who begins working at Freddy Fazbear’s Pizza, where animatronic characters hunt him down. Five Nights at Freddy's was notorious for its use of tension and jump scares, which are also massive influences on Emma Tammi’s film adaptation. Now the incredible cast of the Five Nights at Freddy's movie brings the game's characters to life for the franchise's continued success.
Josh Hutcherson As Mike Schmidt
Mike Schmidt, the protagonist of the Five Nights at Freddy’s movie, takes up a job at Freddy Fazbear’s Pizza that he very quickly comes to regret. The character is essentially a re-imagining of the player’s perspective from the game, though Mike has a much deeper backstory and relatable presence in the movie. In the Five Nights at Freddy's movie cast, Mike is played by Josh Hutcherson, whose breakout role was the protagonist Jess in 2007’s family fantasy Bridge to Terabithia. The actor later played Sean in Journey to the Center of the Earth and strategic fighter Peeta Mellark in the hugely successful Hunger Games franchise.
Matthew Lillard As William Afton
Matthew Lillard’s villainous horror character in Five Nights at Freddy’s not only plays to his strengths as an actor known for unsettling performances but also pays homage to his other iconic horror roles, such as Stu Macher in the original Scream. In the Five Nights at Freddy's movie, he has been cast in the role of William Afton, the franchise’s human antagonist and co-founder of Freddy Fazbear Pizza — though he’s rarely seen on-screen in the games. Lillard’s other iconic roles include Shaggy in the live-action Scooby-Doo, Brian Speer in The Descendants, and Stevo in SLC Punk. He also reprised his iconic role as Shaggy in several Scooby-Doo animated adventures.
Piper Rubio As Abby Schmidt
Abby Schmidt is among the few Five Nights at Freddy’s characters who don’t appear in the original video game, having been created solely for the narrative of the movie. She’s the younger sister of the protagonist, Mike Schmidt, which helps explore the character’s life outside his work at Fazbear’s Pizza. Abby is portrayed by Piper Rubio, and this is her first major movie role. Before ing the cast of Five Nights at Freddy's, the actress appeared in single episodes of Unstable and Pretzel and the Puppies as characters Sophia and Sophie, respectively. Rubio also played the title role of Ivy in the TV movie Holly & Ivy.
Mary Stuart Masterson As An Unnamed Villain
Although Mary Stuart Masterson’s role in the Five Nights at Freddy’s cast hasn’t been revealed yet, the actress is officially playing one of the movie’s several villains. The decision to withhold her character’s name suggests that she’ll be playing another iconic villain from the game franchise — of which there are countless possibilities. The actress is best known for playing Idgie Threadgoode in Fried Green Tomatoes, Joon Pearl in the classic rom-com Benny & Joon, Watts in the John Hughes-penned teen movie Some Kind of Wonderful, and Anita Crown in the Western Bad Girls.
Elizabeth Lail As Vanessa
Vanessa is another character who doesn’t appear in the first Five Nights at Freddy’s video game, but she plays a huge role in the franchise’s many sequels. She’s a follower of the digital virus Glitchtrap, which is one of William Afton’s many forms, making her a powerful antagonist in the games. In the Five Nights at Freddy's movie, Elizabeth Lail is cast in the role of Vanessa. The actress is best known for playing Guinevere Beck, the first victim in Netflix’s serial killer drama You. Lail has also portrayed Frozen's Princess Anna on the show Once Upon a Time, Quinn Harris in Countdown, and Lea in Unintended.
Kevin Foster As Freddy Fazbear
In the video games, Freddy Fazbear is the main villain hunting down the main character during late-night shifts. Freddy is a sentient animatronic that lives in the restaurant during the day, serving as the mascot for Fazbear Pizza. There are plenty of scary animatronics in Five Nights at Freddy’s, but he’s undoubtedly the most threatening. The Five Nights at Freddy's movie cast Kevin Foster to voice the character. He previously played a U.S. Air Force pilot named Jimmy in 2008’s Iron Man, an ACU gunner in Jurassic World, Milos in Drag Me to Hell, and a crazed Santa on American Horror Story.
Jess Weiss As Chica
Chica is another one of the deadly animatronics in Five Nights at Freddy’s, taking the form of a humanoid chicken wearing the restaurant’s merchandise. She often works alongside Freddy in his attempt to kill Mike, hiding in the shadows and watching his every move. The villainous character is played by Jess Weiss, and this is her first known acting credit. Before being cast in the Five Nights at Freddy's movie, Weiss worked as a production assistant on such projects as 65, Palmer, and Unhinged.
Jade Kindar-Martin As Bonnie
Bonnie is another of Fazbear Pizza’s evil animatronics, adopting the appearance of a tall, purple, humanoid bunny. She appears frequently throughout the franchise, always with death and violence following close behind her. As part of the voice cast of Five Nights at Freddy’s, the character is played by stunt performer Jade Kindar-Martin. He has provided body double work in many popular Hollywood productions, including the Purge TV series, the Oscar-nominated drama Causeway, and Bill and Ted Face The Music.
