Cult classic comic strip hero, Flash Gordon, is making his return to comics this year. A brand-new series is set to release from Mad Cave, placing the titular protagonist on a prison planet. His 2024 adventure will be the first in the franchise to be published by Mad Cave.

Flash Gordon was created by Alex Raymond in 1934. Over the course of his ninety-year history, the hero has starred in TV, film, and several comics - including his debut comic strip. Multiple publishers have provided readers with various comic series over the years.

Past publishers include Marvel Comics, DC Comics, Dynamite, IDW Publishing, Charlton Comics, and Dark Horse Comics, among others. AIPT recently shared the announcement about the series. The first taste of Flash Gordon can be had at Free Comic Book Day with Flash Gordon #0, which will begin the series on May 5.

Flash Gordon Returns to Comics In Newest Adventure This Summer

It's like going back in time and bringing all of these beloved characters back to the present, with some new and modern tweaks, but without losing the essence of each one.

Flash Gordon has the creative team of Jeremy Adams, Will Conrad, Lee Loughridge, and Taylor Esposito. There will be cover art and variant covers by Dan Panosian, Frazer Irving, Reilly Brown, and Joe Chiodo. Flash Gordon #1 is scheduled for release in July, making for a fun summer adventure worth anticipating. This series promises familiar faces and intriguing new threats, as well as a galaxy-spanning journey. One classic character that will be included is Dale Arden, his long-time love and adventure companion. The synopsis is as follows:

Flash Gordon awakens on a secret prison planet somewhere in the galaxy. Upon learning that Dale Arden is the subject of an assassination plot, he's forced to break out and make his way across the galaxy to save her. Along the way, he encounters old friends, new threats, and a greater mystery surrounding WHO is pulling the strings of this universe. The first exciting issue in an all-new ongoing series!

Jeremy Adams said he "couldn't be more excited to see Flash Gordon come back to the printed page. Will Conrad has taken the character to a whole new level with his incredible art, and the team at Mad Cave have been a joy to work with as we take this larger-than-life character on a quest that spans the entire universe." It has been around seven years since Flash Gordon fans last saw the hero in an original comic adventure. He last appeared in Flash Gordon: Kings Cross from publisher Dynamite Comics from 2016 to 2017. Now he'll make another comeback.

2024 Marks Mad Cave's First-Ever Flash Gordon Adventure

Will Conrad also expressed excitement about the project, saying "It's like going back in time and bringing all of these beloved characters back to the present, with some new and modern tweaks, but without losing the essence of each one. Can't avoid listening to Queens classic rock riff 'FLASH! AAAAAHHHHH' every time I sit to draw a ." Flash Gordon has remained a comic icon, making it largely unsurprising that he'd be returning to the medium once more. Given the classic nature of the character and the way he is continuously tackled by different publishers, it will be particularly interesting to see what Mad Cave's take on him will be.

Flash Gordon #1 will be available July 24 from Mad Cave, while Flash Gordon #0 will be available for Free Comic Book Day.
