In The Flash 2021 Annual #1 from writer Jeremy Adams with artists Fernando Pasarin and Brandon Peterson, Wally West finds himself in the body of his own past self, albeit on the darkest day of his life: Sanctuary. Forced to relive the panic attack that inadvertently killed several heroes in recovery during Heroes in Crisis, the true villain responsible for the damages to the Speed Force made himself known: Savitar, believing himself to be the Speed Force's true heir and only one deserving of all of its power. However, Wally came to the realization as to why he was chosen by the Speed Force in the first place:

Wally realized that he was chosen by the Speed Force for this mission so that he would be reminded not only of what it means to be The Flash but also that he would be reminded of who he was. If he stopped being the Flash, he wouldn't be Wally. As a result, Wally chose the Speed Force as it had chosen him, and he was given a massive charge and burst of power while Savitar's powers were taken away before being sucked into a vortex.

In any case, it seems as though any ideas Wally had of retiring and having Barry Allen remove his speed are no more. Wally West is back as the Fastest Man Alive for the long term, and he's recommitted himself to being the Speed Force's chosen and favorite Flash in the DC Universe, which is pretty exciting. Now, Wally can be the primary Earth's Flash while Barry Allen works with the Totality and the multiversal team known as Justice Incarnate, ushering in a new era for both speedsters going forward.
