The titular bear of the Five Nights at Freddy’s series, Freddy Fazbear, has gone through many iterations. He’s been cute, teethy, decrepit, golden, brown, and more since his debut in 2014. However, only one game made the absolute best changes to Freddy for the health of the entire series: Five Nights at Freddy’s: Security Breach.
Despite his many costume changes, Freddy Fazbear has essentially always remained the same character in FNAF. He is one of the many interchangeable animatronics that attack the player, all with practically the same motivations regardless of the game. Security Breach made the best change in that all the animatronics have more personality, and more importantly, Freddy is a uniquely friendly bear.
What Security Breach Changed About Freddy Fazbear
A New Type Of Friendly Animatronic
Freddy, known as Glamrock Freddy in Security Breach, is the one animatronic that’s completely friendly to the player. He never wavers in helping out the player (as Gregory), even when that means taking down his friends, Glamrock Chica, Montgomery Gator, and Roxanne Wolf. Players may be predisposed to distrust Freddy – after all, he is an animatronic with an unsettling gaze and years of Freddy jumpscares are always fresh in the mind – but he proves himself to be an incredibly loyal companion.
Glamrock Freddy is simply a good friend, and that makes him an entirely new type of animatronic for Five Nights at Freddy’s. The last time players encountered a friendly animatronic was in Sister Location, where it turned out the seemingly kind Circus Baby was manipulating the player so that she and the other animatronics could scoop out the player’s insides and use them as a skinsuit to escape the underground facility. Glamrock Freddy defied the entirely fair expectations that he would ultimately be a bad guy.
Why Freddy's Changes Were So Important To FNAF
A New Bear For A New Era
The changes to Freddy in personality, unwaveringly helpful and ive, with his iconic line, “Way to go, Superstar!”, give Security Breach and the Five Nights at Freddy’s brand a mascot character that isn’t an enemy. Since the first game dropped in 2014, the animatronics have always been the major draw of the franchise, but they have always been misunderstood villains. Arguments could be made that the animatronics aren’t villains, but the fact remains that they are characters murdering the player character in most games.
Glamrock Freddy is the only exception to this for a major animatronic. He is never villainous, which makes him easy to love for fans new or old. For an evolving franchise that’s increasingly in the public eye, with major movies and sequels on the way, the animatronics have been modified slightly to be heroic rather than just murderous. Five Nights at Freddy's: Security Breach is going about this process in the best way, by allowing other animatronics to continue their traditional scary role, but giving players an animatronic to love without caveats.

Two significant departures from the main series define the new gameplay of this sequel: the game now only takes place throughout one night, and Freddy Fazbear is no longer the antagonist. Now known as Glamrock Freddy, Gregory can partner with Freddy to complete missions and hide in his chest compartment to evade the other killer animatronics on the hunt
