Less than a week after its release, reviews for Forbidden West also positive. Set just six months after the events of Zero Dawn, players once again take control of protagonist Aloy as she continues her search for a way to save the world from extinction.
Like many RPGs, Forbidden West tasks players with the exploration of an open world fraught with danger and mystery. Players can follow the main quests or veer off course to explore side quests and activities that expand on the lore of the game world. Conversations with NPCs offer insights into other characters or enemy encounters and of course merchants can be approached to purchase new items, outfits, weapons, and upgrades. There are also new enemies for Aloy in Forbidden West, many of which use the capabilities of the new-gen PS5. Unfortunately, all of these aspects of a game are susceptible to bugs and glitches and can sometimes cause problems for gamers trying to complete a task.
Developer Guerilla Games has announced the launch of patch 1.05 for Horizon Forbidden West to address some of the issues, crashes, and glitches. While has been positive, some players have run into glitches hindering their progress in a few of the main quests. During these select quests reloading a save file after completing a mission could somehow block progression and, in one instance, skipping the cinematic could cause Aloy to fall out of the game world. These issues have been addressed with this update, along with graphical issues, jittery animations, and NPC glitches. The full patch notes can be seen via the tweet below.
With Horizon Forbidden West only recently releasing, it's good to see the haste with which the developers are addressing these problems. While not everyone has experienced technical issues with the new game launch, there have been people struggling with visual bugs in particular. These include a shimmering effect on-screen, which some have found can be combated not through tweaks to the game's settings, but to their TVs and monitors. This is one of many bugs that Guerrilla is continuing to work on, with another patch hopefully inbound.
A lot of work has gone into this game and seeing how devoted the team at Guerilla Games is to maintaining and improving Forbidden West shows great promise for its future. Horizon Zero Dawn received a DLC expansion in the form of The Frozen Wilds, which expanded on the lore of the world, which lends hope for DLC for Forbidden West. Right now, it's likely that bug fixes are Guerrilla's main priority.
Horizon Forbidden West is available now on PS4 and PS5.
