Epic Games has just announced a new game mode coming to Fortnite, but it will not be the run-of-the-mill Battle Royale style this time. Fans of the title usually know what to expect when updates and new modes are revealed, but Epic has a few tricks up its sleeve during the holiday season.
According to an X post released by the official PlayStation , starting on December 11, Fortnite will be getting a 5v5 tactical first-person shooter mode known as Fortnite Ballistic. Starting with an Early Access launch, the game mode is said to help fans test their skill, precision, and teamwork as they duke it out with the opposition.
Ballistic Mode Is Coming To Fortnite
But What Is The New Game Mode?
While the X post itself doesn't give away too many details, PlayStation posted a link to their blog that gives the nitty-gritty on what to expect from the Fortnite Ballistic mode. There will be two teams created at the start of each match, known as either the Defenders or the Attackers. Each team will have a different goal. The Attackers must successfully plant the "Rift Point Device", which is an explosive that can be placed at one of two sites located on the map. The Defender's job is to stop the Attackers from being able to release such an explosive.

Fortnite Chapter 6 Gameplay Trailer Confirms Godzilla, Alongside New Weapons & Skins
Fortnite's Chapter 6, Season 1 arrives tomorrow and a new trailer has revealed what to expect, including Baymax, Godzilla, and plenty more content.
There are only two paths to success within this game mode, and since there are no respawns, matches should be relatively quick. The first way to secure victory is to detonate the Rift Point Device, while the only other way is to wipe out the opposing team in its entirety. Each match has a total of seven rounds, and after the sixth round of the match, the Attackers become the defenders. The team that wins a total of seven rounds claims victory.
Our Take: Taking A Small Step Back From The Usual Battle Royale
Could This Be The Ultimate FPS?
The comments on the X post from PlayStation all appear to be quite positive, as one known as this could "shake things up" for Fortnite fans.
While I have never been a huge fan of Battle Royales, I have put several hundred hours into them playing with friends. I am more of a FPS person, so this new Ballistic Mode intrigues me and might get me to re- the game and give it a try. With titles like Call of Duty, Overwatch, and now even Marvel Rivals taking over the FPS genre, it will be interesting to see how this pans out for Epic, and whether Fortnite fans will enjoy the new mode overall.
