Chapter 2 of Fortnite introduced the ability to upgrade weapons using Weapon Upgrade Benches, but in Season 5 every upgrade bench has been removed from the map. Instead of workbenches, players will have to track down specific NPCs and spend their hard-earned gold bars to upgrade their weapons. However, finding the right NPCs can be a bit of a challenge if the player doesn't know where to look.

Fortnite Chapter 2 Season 5 is one of the most ambitious seasons to date with the introduction of NPCs. These NPCs can be found scattered around the map and have a variety of uses. They can assign players quests, initiate bounties for other players, trade items and weapons for gold, and of course, upgrade weapons. Each NPC offers unique items and challenges making it important for players to learn what each one offers and where to find them. The most important NPCs of which are the ones that players can use to upgrade their weapons.

How To Upgrade Weapons In Fortnite Season 5

The map above shows the location of 10 NPCs that players can talk to in order to upgrade their weapons. Players will need to use gold to upgrade their weapons which can be obtained in a variety of different ways from killing other players, opening chests, completing NPC quests, and destroying certain furniture. The cost of the upgrade will vary depending on what level the player is attempting to upgrade their weapon too. The prices per upgrades are as follows:

  • Common to Uncommon - 50 gold bars
  • Uncommon to Rare - 150 gold bars
  • Rare to Epic - 250 gold bars
  • Epic to Legendary - 350 gold bars

This means that if players want to fully upgrade a common assault rifle they will need to spend 800 gold bars. Luckily, gold in small amounts is pretty easy to come by and a player's gold carries over from match to match. Players may want to save up to purchase one of the various exotic weapons that special NPCs carry, but those cost a lot more than fully upgrading an underpowered weapon. The best part about upgrading is that it is instantaneous instead of waiting for the upgrade bench's long progress bar. Sadly, these NPCs can be eliminated effectively removing them from the map until the next match.
