Britney Spears has recently spoken out about the recent NYT documentary Framing Britney Spears. The documentary, which made waves once it hit Hulu and FX in February, chronicles the pop star’s early life, caustic relationship with fame, and, more specifically, her legal struggles with her conservatorship, which is managed by her father.
managed by her father, Jamie Spears. When Spears’s father underwent some health issues, a temporary conservator stepped in for the personal life duties, and now Spears is legally requesting the temporary conservator to be made permanent. Nevertheless, Jamie Spears would still remain co-conservator of her financial estate.
However, in a somewhat unexpected turn of events, Britney Spears has taken to Instagram to reveal her true feelings about the documentary…or so some believe. In a video of her dancing to Aerosmith, she attached a caption talking about how she’s been mistreated by the media and the toll it has taken on her ability to be vulnerable. In regards to the documentary, she says it embarrassed her and caused her to cry for two weeks.
But the seed of the #FreeBritney movement, highlighted in the documentary, started with conspiratorial suspicions—conspiracy about Britney Spears’s free will in everything, including who was forcing her to say what and when, especially when it comes to her social media. It appears that this disbelief in Spears acting of her own free will continues, with many fans and ers in the comments of her latest post cautioning others not to believe it, because she likely did not write it. This is not too far-fetched; the singer’s lawyers have told the court that Spears refuses to return to performing while her father manages her life, claiming that she is frightened of him.
To be honest, there are many reasons why the fans may be correct; a major one being, the film showed the singer in a mostly positive light. Framing Britney Spears reframed the way audiences saw the pop star: not as troubled, but hounded by the paparazzi; not as scandalous, but scandalized by the media; and, generally, mistreated by almost every man in her life—including her, often neglectful, father. Former boyfriend and fellow pop star Justin Timberlake ended up issuing a statement of apology, spurred by the details in the doc, to all of the women he has hurt in his past. Adding to the suspicion, Spears' Instagram posts, in particular, have been nonsensical for a while now, filled with random bizarre comments and lots of emojis. Some fans believe these posts are hiding secret messages. However, when it comes to Britney Spears’s free will, only time will tell—and only if, in that time, she gets to speak for herself.
