Actor Kelsey Grammer reveals why the Frasier reboot won't return to Cheers. Frasier Crane has been back in Boston for quite some time, but he has yet to visit his old drinking hole. More than 30 years ago, a young Frasier spent most of his nights chugging beer at Sam Malone's pub. Given this, there have been hopes that he would step back into the underground bar now that he lives again in Beantown.
Unfortunately, the Paramount+ revival is confirmed not to visit the iconic drinking spot. Aside from the fact that the Frasier reboot already has a Cheers replacement with Mahoney's, Grammer tells Deadline that there's another reason why Frasier isn't getting his beer supply from his usual spot, and it has something to do with the people who worked on Cheers. Read his answer below:
I’m not sure the guys who wrote Cheers would want us to go back to Cheers. It’s like, let’s let that be where it is. It’s a monument in the minds of television history.
Why It Would Be Difficult For The Frasier Reboot To Visit Cheers?
Although the Frasier reboot hasn't visited Cheers, there have been various references to the bar and the time that Frasier spent there. Intriguingly, there has been no direct mention of it, even when Lilith returned and reunited with her ex-husband in the Frasier reboot episode 7, "Freddy's Birthday." Both Grammer and Bebe Neuwirth's characters were first introduced in the legendary NBC sitcom. Although Grammer doesn't name-drop anyone who doesn't want the revival to feature Cheers, co-creator James Burrows has previously made his negative stance clear about rebooting Cheers.
Assuming that the Cheers bar is still open, it won't be easy for Frasier to just walk right in. For starters, the pub may no longer belong to Sam. Considering his age, he may have already sold it years ago, which means that he may not even be there when Frasier comes in. The same goes for Carla, Cliff, Norm, and even Woody. Meanwhile, if they are still there, then it just makes the story of Cheers tragic. Seeing the older cast still wasting their nights away drinking isn't exactly a great sight for a reunion.
For what it's worth, when Frasier visited Boston in the original show, his reunion with Carla, Norm, and Cliff wasn't in Cheers. Instead, it had to happen at a different bar, and considering Grammer's recent quote, it's curious if there's an unofficial ban on featuring the pub again. In any case, there are other ways for the Frasier reboot to honor the sitcom without having to revisit its primary setting.
The Frasier reboot drops new episodes every Thursday on Paramount.
