After two seemingly successful seasons on the streaming platform, Frasier has garnered mixed reviews from critics, but positive reviews from audiences.

Deadline has brought word that Paramount+ has cancelled the Frasier revival after two seasons on the streamer. While no explanation was given as to why the comedy is not getting another season from them, sources report that CBS Studios is going to shop the show to other outlets in the hopes of continuing it. The two biggest candidates the studio is reportedly eyeing are Prime Video and Hulu, as both have the entirety of the original show's run.

What This Means For Frasier Season 3's Chances

Jumping Streaming Platforms Is No Easy Feat

Though the revival may have been popular with fans of the original show, it may not come entirely as a surprise to learn that Frasier has been cancelled after two seasons on Paramount+. The show never really broke out among the streaming race with other platforms, likely a side effect of its platform being better known for such dramas as Taylor Sheridan's Yellowstone franchise and the Star Trek universe, more so than comedies. Plus, Frasier season 2 failed to see a turnaround from the middling critical reception to season 1, ultimately landing a Rotten 50% on Rotten Tomatoes.

Even still, while fans of the show are likely to begin campaigning for the show's continued life, cancelled shows making a leap between platforms is a very rare occurrence. The general reason for this is the sheer amount of licensing deals a studio has to navigate in finding a new home for a title, with some of the handful of exceptions to saved shows still seeing a period of time in which their previous seasons were not available in their new home.

Ultimately, one of the biggest issues the Frasier revival faces in getting a new season 3 home is that no Paramount+ show has successfully survived cancellation by moving to a new platform. One of the more notable recent examples was the similar two-season run of the Halo adaptation, with 343 Industries and Amblin Television having sought to find it a new home after its cancellation. Even in spite of a far better response from critics and audiences to season 2, the show has failed to find a new platform in the six months since.

Our Take On Frasier's Potential Future

The Sitcom Genre Is In A Unique Place Right Now

Though it undoubtedly has a long road ahead, and one that I'm honestly not fully sure will go in its favor, Frasier's future may find a boost in the fact that the sitcom genre is still alive and fairly well. Tim Allen's recent return with Shifting Gears was met with poor reviews, and yet set major viewership records with just its premiere for ABC and Hulu, all while the Big Bang Theory franchise at CBS seems to show no signs of slowing. While the recently announced Neighborhood spinoff could take away some focus from the studio on Frasier, I do kind of see them trying for a while.
