Freaky Friday 2 is officially in the works at Disney with its original stars. Jamie Lee Curtis and Lindsay Lohan led the original 2003 movie, which was itself based on Mary Rodgers' 1972 book of the same name and revolved around an estranged mother-daughter pair who swap bodies on one very odd Friday. Freaky Friday was a success, grossing $160.2 million worldwide and further entertaining a generation through frequent reruns on television. Within the past year, Curtis and Lohan have stirred up talk of a potential sequel, with Curtis even itting she actually wrote to Disney about making it happen.

Now, according to THR, Disney is putting Freaky Friday 2 into development, with Elyse Hollander writing the script. Currently, both Curtis and Lohan are expected to return, but little else about the project is known beyond that. Interestingly, earlier on Wednesday, Curtis posted about the original Freaky Friday, which is celebrating its 20th anniversary this year:

What Freaky Friday 2 Could Look Like

This is arguably the best time for a Freaky Friday 2. Curtis is fresh off her first Oscar win for her performance in the multiversal hit Everything Everywhere All at Once, and Lohan has just begun to return to acting. She recently appeared in the Netflix romcom Falling for Christmas and has at least one more in the works. Freaky Friday remains a beloved project for both Curtis and Lohan, and the idea of seeing them reunite onscreen after all these years is an enticing one, especially since they're still close.

It remains to be seen whether anyone else from the 2003 Freaky Friday cast will return. Chad Michael Murray, Rosalind Chao, and Mark Harmon could all Curtis and Lohan, though it is worth recalling how Harmon made waves when he departed his hit CBS series NCIS in 2021. Since then, he hasn't taken on any new projects, so Freaky Friday 2 might not feature his character, who married Curtis' at the end of the original film. However, there's an argument to be made that only Curtis and Lohan are necessary for a Freaky Friday 2.

The original film focused squarely on the bond between their characters, Tess and Anna, and presumably the sequel will as well. Whether it will involve another surprise body swap between the two of them is less clear, though considering the basic premise of the entire Freaky Friday concept, it seems likely that it will. Perhaps this time, Tess and Anna have grown frustrated with their own lives instead of each other and will need to be taught to appreciate what they each have. Hopefully, more details regarding Freaky Friday 2 will emerge soon.
