Freaky Friday 2 now has an official synopsis, release plan, and seven more actors from the previous film returning. The long-awaited sequel to the 2003 Freaky Friday will see Jamie Lee Curtis and Lindsay Lohan reprising their iconic roles as Tess and Anna Coleman. Curtis and Lohan have previously spoken about their enthusiasm to reunite for a sequel, with further updates being shared over the past few years, including that it will be directed by Nisha Ganatra.

According to Walt Disney Studios, the sequel will be released in theaters nationwide in 2025. In addition to Curtis and Lohan, Mark Harmon, Chad Michael Murray, Christina Vidal Mitchell, Haley Hudson, Lucille Soong, Stephen Tobolowsky, and Rosalind Chao are also returning. Julia Butters, Sophia Hammons, Manny Jacinto, and Maitreyi Ramakrishnan are being added to the cast as well. Read the official synopsis below:

A sequel to the beloved 2003 film with a multigenerational twist, the film picks up years after Tess (Curtis) and Anna (Lohan) endured an identity crisis. Anna now has a daughter of her own and a soon-to-be stepdaughter. As they navigate the myriad challenges that come when two families merge, Tess and Anna discover that lightning might indeed strike twice.

Freaky Friday 2 Has All The Ingredients To Be A Worthy Sequel

The Cast, Synopsis, And Release Plan Are All Promising

Curtis and Lohan's enthusiasm to make a sequel was the first positive sign of Freaky Friday 2 becoming a reality. A sequel would only work with their return, and with them still holding prominent roles, which is confirmed by the synopsis. At the same time, focusing on the multigenerational aspect of the story and introducing Anna's daughter and soon-to-be stepdaughter will help move the story forward, ensuring the sequel isn't just about Tess and Anna again.

While Curtis and Lohan returning was most important in creating a sequel, it is also promising that so many other of the original cast are also returning. Harmon, Murray, Chao and the other veteran cast are all part of why Freaky Friday remains a beloved comedy of the early 2000s. Equally exciting is the addition of new cast , especially Jacinto, who has demonstrated his considerable comedic talent in NBC's critically acclaimed series The Good Place, and is currently demonstrating a balance between sinister and humorous energy in Disney+'s Star Wars: The Acolyte.

Confirmation of Freaky Friday 2 being a theatrical release is also a good sign. With so many high-profile actors returning or making their Freaky Friday debut in what sounds like a compelling expansion of the 2003 film, it deserves to be seen on the big screen and to be made to feel like an event. Quietly releasing on Disney+ would be a disservice to the excitement that already surrounds Freaky Friday 2, and that will only continue to build as the 2025 release date draws closer.
