He's the maniac mama's boy with the massive machete, the unkillable creep from Camp Crystal Lake, the silent slasher who cuts to the quick, he's the one and only Jason Voorhees. This famous horror film freak has been the terror of teenage victims as far back as the 1980s and has become a movie icon.
Though he's most famous for wearing his trademark hockey mask and wielding his bloody blade, Jason's overall look has changed immensely since he first hit the screen. Which set of his killer threads makes for the best look for this summer camp slasher? Have a look at today's list and find out if you dare.
Part II
Since Jason technically didn't get a proper appearance until Friday the 13th: Part II, we can think of no better place to begin our list then this simple but effective display of redneck couture. The plaid shirt and overalls might be harmless enough on their own, but pair that with the sack-head mask and you can practically hear the evil banjo music.
Joking aside, this look definitely has the appearance of an urban legend come to life. We can't help but wonder if maybe the filmmakers took some notes from The Town that Dreaded Sundown when creating the first look for Jason.
Part III
The second film's look was okay, but we could hardly call it iconic. After all, a burlap mask is so easy to replicate and reuse. But it wasn't until Part III that Jason acquired his iconic hockey mask. One might consider this the ideal starting point for fans of Jason Voorhees, because not only does it contain his iconic look but the cheesy slasher tropes the genre is famous for today.
The look is simple but effective, a green button-up shirt, some heavy black boots, and that famous mask all work together to give us a memorable maniac. It was so effective, they worked off of it for the proceeding films.
Part IV: The Final Chapter
At first glance, there really isn't much difference between Jason's look in Part III and Part IV. that being said, we are willing to give special attention to this looks simply because of continuity. In most slasher movies, the character in question mainly sticks with the same routine. Jason, however, evolves with the series.
Part IV's costume not only looks worse for wear, like Jason has been living in the woods for a certain amount of time, but the gash from the hatchet wound in the previous film is prominently featured near the top of the mask. A small detail, but one true fans appreciate.
Part VIII: Jason Takes Manhattan
Say what you want about Jason Takes Manhattan, but we definitely have a soft spot for it. Especially considering the fact that Jason's look got some serious tweaking. Jason definitely looks like he has seen better days, but his tattered outfit isn't afraid to show the muscular powerhouse behind the hockey mask.
Part VIII's look is perpetually wet, which makes sense given that Jason spends a portion of his life at the bottom of a lake, his clothes are darker and well-worn, and his mask has a unique orange tint to it that for some reason works for him. It's not top-tier material, but it's a look we wish we could have seen more of.
Part IX: Jason Goes to Hell
Jason Goes to Hell earns more of an honorable mention on our list, simply because the guy doesn't really appear all that much in the film. He sports a seriously scary look that definitely looks like he survived a series of nine horror movies. There's an overall meaty quality to his appearance that has a serious intimidation factor.
Our favorite detail once again is the mask, it looks like it's literally embedded into the guy's flesh. But even this gigantic Jason isn't strong enough to handle a swarm of FBI agents that bombard him with bullets and explosives.
Jason X
Jason X is without a doubt the most ridiculous and insane entry in the entire Friday the 13th franchise. This movie is definitely more comedy than it is horror, but it did give us a pretty cool sci-fi inspired outfit for our buddy Jason to don. Still, we do enjoy how his starting look has various bits and pieces from his other appearances.
But it it, you're not here for that. You're here for the cybernetic enhancements and robotic features of Über Jason. This version of the character is without a doubt the most OP variation in the entire series. He'd definitely give the Terminator a run for his money.
Part VII
Telekinetic teenagers aside, Friday the 13th: Part VII was quite an excellent entry into the series. It also gave us one of Jason's best appearances in the entire franchise. For many fans, this is the version they the most when they hear the name, Jason Voorhees.
Jason's body has decayed and shows bits of his skeleton, his jacket is black and ragged, any sports a huge metal chain around his neck from his drowning in the previous film. Pair that with the gnarly skull-like face under the mask and you've got one memorable movie monster on your hands.
Part VI
This was the entry in the Friday the 13th franchise where things began to get a little silly. But at least the humor present was more self-aware than ludicrous. That being said, we get an impressive and practical approach to Jason's look as an undead zombie. Part VI's Zombie Jason featured his standard slasher fashion but paired it with a functional tool belt and a pair of bright orange gloves. This might seem strange to some viewers, but given the line of work the guy is in it makes perfect sense. After all, tools are a big part of Jason's Arsenal.
Friday The 13th (Remake)
There are a lot of horror movie remakes that fail to capture what made the original series great. Friday the 13th's remake at least tries to be a modern take featuring a classic character instead of trying to reboot, redo, and refurbish the star of the film himself.
The remake basically puts Jason in the modern era and that's roughly about it. His clothes might look a little bit more current, but he still looks like something we'd see in the original series. There's a nod to Part II's burlap mask as well, but Jason himself, in both look and delivery, is as classic as they come.
Freddy Vs. Jason
In all honesty, this flick is only good when both Freddy and Jason are on the screen, but for the time that we do see our hero in a hockey mask, he sports an imposing, unique, and iconic look. There are elements of Part VI's zombie-inspired look, as well as tidbits of Part III, but the ensemble is entirely his own.
We're particularly fond of the blue tinting the entire look has, associating Jason with a watery element. This works perfectly against Freddy's fiery personality and chaos. Even Jason's exposed flesh has a sort of waterlogged quality. It's a look that perfectly and captures the character, and one worthy of our top spot. (Even if the movie isn't.)
