The Friends gang was a close-knit group that spent most of their time together, either at Central Perk, Joey's, or Monica's. They shared the up and downs of their lives and, in doing so, became truly inseparable.

The beloved six found many ways to express their love and affection, including using pet names for each other. Pheebs was a nick for Phoebe, Joe for Joey, Mon for Monica, and Rach for Rachel. As for Ross and Chandler, they made up nicknames for themselves, depending on the stage of life they were navigating. The gang, all in all, had interesting nicknames ranging from funny to downright terrible.

Funniest

Rachel: Ray-Ray Green

Rachel meets her friends Melissa Warburton at Central Perk in Friends

When Rachel runs into an old friend, Melissa, fans learn she'd nicknamed her "Ray Ray Green" in college. It's been a while since the two women met, and there's a brief moment of awkwardness between them. Notwithstanding that, Mellisa calls Rachel by her nickname, "Ray Ray Green," thereby making it easy to break the ice.

Fans love this blast from Rachel's past and wish they'd had more than an episode ("The One with Rachel's Big Kiss") to see what "Ray Ray Green" was like in her college days. Due credit goes to Mellisa whose quick wit and sharp sense of humor led Rachel to have a nickname atypical of her sorority past.

Chandler: The Chan-Chan Man

There's no denying that Chandler Bing has the gift of the gab. Popularly known as the king of sarcasm, Chandler has the shadiest burns in Friends to his credit. He would often come up with unique, and sarcastic nicknames for his friends and for himself. One such funny nickname lies in the episode, "The One with the Dollhouse."

Rachel's boss, Joanna expressed interest in Chandler, and out of sheer excitement of being liked by another woman, the name, "the Chan-Chan Man" flies right out of his mouth. This particular nickname is Chandler's way of conveying he's charming enough to be liked by a fashion executive at Bloomingdale's, and that's exactly why it sounds funny at the moment.

 Joey: Dragon

Dragon is among Joey Tribbiani's notable alias that appears in one of the funniest Friends episodes - "The One with the Girl From Poughkeepsie." It catches on when Joey starts working at Monica's Allesandro's to allow her to 'fake fire' him and set an example for others.

Owing to his friendly disposition, Joey makes friends with Allessandro's team quickly. Stu and the staff love him and it turns out, they have been calling him by the name, "Dragon." That said, there's nothing to pick on this particular name for its doting, and describes Joey's quirky personality well.

Phoebe: Vidal Buffay

Chandler Phoebe and Joey at Monica's in Friends

The wordsmith, Chandler comes up with a quirky nickname for Phoebe in "The One with Ross's New Girlfriend." When Monica notices his and Joey's hair, Chandler credits Phoebe by calling her "Vidal Buffay" as a way to compliment her hairdressing skills.

It's even funnier when Phoebe mimics Vidal Sassoon s' commercial slogan, "If you don't look good, we don't look good." Fans love the name, "Vidal Buffay" because it sounds cool and edgy all at the same time. Chandler and Joey's haircuts from Phoebe are counted among the best hairstyles of the Friends' main characters, and Phoebe is deserving of the moniker.

Monica: Little Harmonica

Jack Geller kisses Monica as she falls asleep on the couch in Friends

To Jack Geller, Monica will always be his "Little Harmonica," no matter how old she grows, or what kind of pickle she's in. Viewers hear the chucklesome nickname for the time in season 1's "The One with the Sonogram at the End."

Jack's nickname for Monica boasts clever wordplay and is atypical of dad humor. It comes as no surprise why fans prefer this witty little mix-up name "Little Harmonica" from all Monica's nicknames on Friends.

Terrible

Chandler: Boss Man Bing

When Chandler gets a promotion, he finds it hard to believe most of his colleagues do not like him anymore. All of this comes to light only when he hires Phoebe to fill in for his secretary in "The One with the Ick Factor." Fans find out Chandler's juniors call him names such as "Mr. Bing," "Mr. Boss Man," and "Boss Man Bing."

Not only is Chandler given all these disrespectful names, but he also learns that his colleagues do impressions of him. He is understandably upset and he feels terrible about the fact that people call him such unpleasant names behind his back.

Chandler: Mr. Caring Boss

Chandler talks to his colleagues in the office lobby Friends

In the same episode, when Chandler thinks he's finally won over his juniors, Phoebe reminds him they still make fun of him. She brings to light the fact that they've started to call him a host of fresh names such as "Mr. Caring Boss," Mr. I'm one of you, Boss."

All of these names are designed to make feel Chandler inadequate as a person of authority. He's upset until Phoebe helps him see the light about being the one in charge and lifts his spirits. The episode is one of the major reasons why fans believe Phoebe and Chandler would have been the perfect couple in Friends.

Rachel: Gal Pal, Rachel Green

Ross Rachel and Joey hanging at Monica's in Friends

Joe sits for an interview with the Soap Opera Digest magazine at Rachel's insistence in "The One with Joey's Interview." She convinces him by saying he deserves all the praise, while also wanting him to mention her name as "Gal Pal, Rachel Green" in the interview.

Though Rachel tries to push the name on Joey, and the Soap Opera Digest journalist, no one budges. The first half of the nickname is unnecessary and the whole of it combined together sounds wordy. Viewers wholeheartedly agree with Chandler when he sarcastically remarks, "Is that "gal pal" spelled L-O-S-E-R?"

Ross: The Ross-A-Tron

Ross Geller and Chandler Bing at Joey's in Friends

Fans break into laughter when they hear Ross push hard for the nickname, "the Ross-A-Tron." In "The One with All the Cheesecakes," the gang is hanging at Joey's when out of nowhere, Ross asks for "another beer for the Ross-A-Tron."

From Chandler's hand gestures and Joey's shriek, it's clear Ross tried to get out his name before but it didn't work. The "Ross-A-Tron" was used for comedic effect and nothing more and that's why it never caught on. It sounded weird, lengthy, and really, uncool.

Joey: Sailor Joe

Rachel teaches Joey sailing in Friends

Rachel's father, Dr. Leonard Green had instilled a ion for sailing in her. When her good friend, Joey bought his own boat, she wanted him to master the sport, too.

Joe would much rather drink beers and eat sandwiches with his boat docked at the marina. So a frustrated Rachel resorted to calling him names such as "Sailor" and "Sailor Joe" with an obvious hint of sarcasm in her voice. Joey was anything but a sailor. He wouldn't show respect to the craft, and therefore "Sailor Joe" is easily the worst nickname he's ever had on Friends.
